Summer camp flew by fast, and before you know it, the day of the confession arrives.Oikawa goes with the master confession plan: Ayame visits one of Aobajousai's practices, then stop by again at a crepe shope with her before walking her home. Then he confesses his love for her in front of her apartment. Sounds simple enough. Should be a piece of cake.
But I guess plans don't work as they usually do, because they both end up in the school's infirmary with scratches. Girls who support Oikawa can get pretty gruesome to whoever gets near him - and it worries Oikawa. How will this work out? She's from a rival team, a target for his fangirls, a potential long distance girlfriend when he moves out for college - there's far too many obstacles for him to jump over.
Heck, his last girlfriend broke up with him because he did not give her enough attention: now along with the aforementioned complexities and his lack of sensitivity to girl's hearts, Oikawa's teetering on lines to make their relationship work.
But those worries are long gone now. What matters is now. He will take the chance to win her before anyone else does.
He really did like Ayame - she simply stood out to him because of her wry personality. Not only that, but she can make his heart swoop with a simple compliment or smile.
Funny, how this all started. He just wanted to rile up the Karasuno club members by flirting with her - but she ended up being more interesting that he initially thought. And so he tried, tried, then tried.
Then he fell for her.
What was it that Oikawa thought she was? Ah....A hard fish to catch.
And what's funnier is that he feels like the magic of having his first love again. It feels like he's only in junior high, a person with a warm naive heart. Every flaw of his crush suddenly vanishes like smoke in his eyes. Like they're truly perfect. He thought Ayame was reliving those sweet, fluffy junior high memories of addictively sweet lovestruck.
He loves it. He yearns for it.
As silly as he comes off to Ayame with his corny pick up lines, he really did like her. He thought he was so in love that his heart could burst.
Oikawa is far more knowledgeable that the warm summer heat that enters the windows isn't the reason for his clammy hands, misted with sweat. Yet his fingertips feel cold. Too cold. Too nervous. The gentle, mending touches on his cheek makes his stomach feel bubbly. The tunnel vision heightens and the surroundings of the clinic vanishes before him now. It's only him and her. His focus is entirely on Ayame alone.
And her lips...they look so soft. Ayame is so close to him right now, eyes fixed on the cheek cut from the shards of the pot. He wonders how they would feel against his. Would it feel like his first kiss again?
He locks eyes with her, and before Ayame gets to speak, he leans in.
He was right. They were soft. But Ayame doesn't move - doesn't reciprocate the kiss. He didn't see her eyes fluttering shut or lean in too. That breaks his heart.
In the least of being heartbroken, he makes sure to savor these feelings of kissing her. It, as he has expected, will be his last. It was good while it lasted.
And when he pulls away, his heart cracked even more. Ayame merely blinks her eyes in confusion, a good three seconds of sheer dumbfounded-ness.
