As soon as Fukui and Oikawa reached her home, Oikawa's been showered with pampering. Sure, it feels nice receiving treatment, but it's just not enough to cheer him up. He's already wrapped in a warm comforter, a cup of noodles in his grasp and a rusty western action movie in front of him. Despite the summer haze, the blast of the AC keeps the whole room chilly.Yes, it feels nice, maybe alleviates some of the pain, but not all of it. Fukui, who's also watching the movie beside him on the bed. She looks engrossed in it more than he is - and he's a bigger movie freak out of the two.
But that is not the case at all.
In fact, Fukui's mind is playing another movie - a flashback from earlier's events. You see, her job is to make everything flow smoothly - and that means looking around too. A hunch, a tiny hunch that bothered Fukui that a mishap may occur that will make a turn of events.
She was right once she sees the aftermath of broken shards of a clay pot scattered all over the sidewalk. And this one other girl is cleaning it, a frown on her face. Gentle hands handled the lifeless plant whose rigidness weakened from the falling impact. She recognizes this girl... small, tiny, and an innocent type of cute. There's a watering can - that same one that nearly hit her head during the incident at the clean up.
Oh. That's the girl in charge of watering the school's flowers. Wasn't her name Hika-chan...?
Fukui decides to help her clean up. Hika-chan was obviously the one who's left with this mess, whoever those fangirls are. At Fukui's help, she receives a grateful smile from her.
"Seriously... Why do they have to harm plants too?" Hika-chan puffs her cheeks cutely. "I mean I like Tooru too, but at least I don't stoop this low to do this."
"Some of his fangirls can get pretty gruesome," Fukui chuckles weakly, "it's best to steer as far away from them."
"That's true..." Hika-chan agrees. "The only thing I don't get is why they have to bother."
"Bother how?" Fukui quirks her head.
"Why they have to bother hurting the visitor from Karasuno." She answers, and her sweet demeanor fades, "from the start, I knew it just wont work out for Tooru. It feels... forced somehow. He can be quite impatient. And selfish."
" - If I were the girls, I would only bother with those who show some real threat."
-*-
And Hika-chan was right. It didn't work out in the end, and Fukui knows that even without the pot incident, it wouldn't have changed the outcome of Oikawa's rejection. It wouldn't have changed that Ayame liked someone else.
What she doesn't get is that - Oikawa is admittedly a pretty dashing lad. Why would Ayame choose a bitter boy over someone as sweet as him? In terms of both personality and looks, Oikawa definitely wins over Tsukishima. She wonders how Ayame Yamamoto manage to fall for someone like an ice prince like Tsukishima Kei.
Frustrating - confusing, this odd thing called love.
The gunshots and string of curses from the movie come back to her as she comes back to her surroundings. Oikawa merely gazes at the movie in an uninterested manner, eyes lidded halfway as he shifts to a more comfortable position..
This is nice. This is calming. This is cozy. But it's just not enough.
Maybe a nap would help.
Giving in, he slumps down weakly and lie his head on Fukui's lap.
Fukui's eyes widened. "Wh - "
"I'm tireeeeeeed," Oikawa drawls out. "This isn't working."
Fukui sighs in defeat, perhaps the turn-down routine isn't made for everyone. What she doesn't get is that there's a large bed made, yet he chooses her lap. Reluctantly she gives in, grabbing the nearest pillow to and slides it on her lap to make him more comfortable. From below, Oikawa can see faint freckles sprinkled on her skin - which only appears whenever she's exposed to too much sun.
Yes, this feels much better.
"Why the long face, Ume-chan?" Oikawa asks, "you look ugly when you frown like that."
"Why thanks," Fukui replies with bite (even when upset she still doesn't let up).
"- It's just that we - you - "
"I know. It hurts." Oikawa smiles sadly, "But on the brighter side, I finally did it, didn't I? Besides, I was able to make her blush."
Fukui's eyes widened. "Eh?! Then maybe there's a chance -!!"
"That's what I thought too," Oikawa is still smiling, though it's a lot like a smile he makes to his teammates after a loss. "I told her 'all I have to do is make you fall in love,'. But after thinking about it, she was right. It's much easier said than done."
Fukui looks down to him, and Oikawa's giving her that reassuring smile. It's definitely not like him to give up so easily too.
"...It's better to let this stupid operation of ours to be put to rest, don't you think?"
She takes in a breath and nods. And Oikawa smiles warmly at that, and perhaps the noodles made her stomach feel warm and queasy.
Does she even like him that way? How confusing.
What is love anyways?
If Takumi said Oikawa didn't really love Ayame - he is only in love with the concept of it...Perhaps it wasn't the right type of love. Fate has a funny way of playing with people's hearts, and you'll think it's real - that it's a true fairytale love. But it's not. Real life is separate from books. It can be cruel to those who don't deserve it.
Hika-chan said he's far too impatient - too possessive to make his love for Ayame work. He only wanted to ask her because he didn't like the idea of others getting near her while he's away - and maybe that same reasoning is what brought disaster. He was simply fueled through time pressure and distaste for anyone else with her. The thought of Ayame and Tsukishima together while he's fixed on college made his gut curdle.
Oikawa's eyes look clear, tired. Maybe now he has come to accept that Ayame likes somebody else. He'd much rather have her happy with someone else. Broken, yes, but now he's healing.
It wasn't meant to be, he thinks before his eyes fluter shut and fall asleep.
You see, love is not when you see someone as perfect - as ethereally beautiful. It's about accepting one's flaws, embracing them as much as you love the rest. It's about putting their own needs before you own. It's about canceling plans just to make someone happy. Little sacrifices.
Love is patience. Love is selflessness. Love is kind.
Maybe Oikawa will find someone who makes him feel that way - one day. Hopefully. Eventually.
If you love a flower, don't pick it up.
Because if you pick it up, it dies and it ceases to be what you love.So if you love a flower, let it be.
Love is not about possession,
Love is about appreciation.-Osho
