A flash of light gleamed across the walls in an eerily quiet room. Silent, aside from the whispers and gentle rapping of retreating raindrops on the single windowsill. With the curtains drawn, the space felt desolate and lifeless, like a neglected tomb, slowly being forgotten by time. The covers had been thrown slovenly over misshapen, deflated pillows. Aimlessly, like someone couldn't be bothered or left in a hurry. How long had it been since someone slept in that sloppily made bed?
Piles of torn open mail teetering in disarray on the edge of a dresser shifted with the sudden burst of air. A letter on the very top twisted away from the stack, threatening to topple the entire heap. The mirror in the corner seemed to be the source of the strange wind. It began to shake violently, vibrating back and forth on its brassy claw feet.
A second gust disquieted the dust and cobwebs littering the bookshelves, side tables, and chest of drawers. The light from the mirror was like a beacon, invoking the empty room back to life. Illuminating the specks of powdered earth, sending them floating like swirling clouds of muted fireflies. With a loud humming noise a third blast blew open the curtains and spit four people onto the floor.
"Ugh... Fuck," she sighed. Lani slowly opened her eyes, groaning at the pain throbbing in her back. She rolled onto her side, reaching for Kakucho in the returning darkness. The only light left came from the oddly glowing moon outside of the window.
Oh yeah, it must be the middle of the night here. She thought to herself as she looked over to see where Nai was. Nai was lying on her stomach, face down on top of Benkei. He was sprawled out on his back, groaning with one of his massive hands spread across his face. His other hand was planted firmly in the center of Nai's back, holding her still.
"You okay?" Kakucho asked. He held Lani tightly, squeezing her as if he was afraid she still may be swept away. "Anything hurting?" He unraveled his arms from her waist and sat up next to her. "That shit kind of tossed us out, huh?" His hands followed his eyes up and down her body searching for any bumps or bruises.
"Yeah. I'm good, thanks." She groans and rubs her lower back. "Uhh, I thought I was starting to get used to this shit. But uhh—"
"Come on." Kaku pulls her to her feet, helping her knock the dust off of her clothes. "Thank you," Lani says and walks over to the wall. With a flick, the lights are on. They squint at the brightness.
"Mmm," Nai grumbled. "Oh—- oh my god Benkei." Nai quickly shuffles off of him onto her knees. "I'm so sorry! Are —-you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." He rubs the back of his head and takes a look around the room. "I guess you were right, we didn't need the handcuffs." He laughs. "We're all here." He quirked an eyebrow at her and smiled.
If time could've stopped at that moment it would have. Everything in front of her moved in slow motion. It felt like it took ages for eyes to close and open again but when they did, she saw how breathtaking he really was. He was beautiful in his world but here, the texture of his skin reminded her of burnished teak. Smooth and shiny like he'd been bathed in expensive oils.
Every fine line was perfectly placed between the mountain ranges that were his shoulders. When he smiled at her, his eyes glinted like gold bars and even with the blur in her eyes, shone as bright as the stars glittering outside the bedroom. She stared at him, half in shock. Her mouth hung open like it was her first time seeing him. In a way it was. It felt like it.
"What is it?"
"What? I mean. No—-it's nothing. It's just seeing you guys in my world. It's so——- weird."
"Yeah, I guess so." Benkei looks down at his hand and then up at Nai, examining her face. "This shit kinda crazy——- I feel like I'm watching a movie. I don't know how to explain it, but you look kinda 3D." His eyes drift off following the curve of Nai's ass. She snaps her fingers to get his attention.
