"Ughh.... today was such a long day we did a lot, I'm tired." Nai drys her hair off before throwing her towel down on the floor. She plops down onto the couch, kicking her feet up after a nice hot shower. She hung her head over the armrest and stared up at the ceiling. "Mhm. My legs hurt.... I wanna die." She groaned. "I should have soaked more."
"You should be. Your school is fucking huge. How did you guys manage to walk that shit every day?" Benkei strolled over to the fridge, taking a bottle of water out. "All of those goddamn stairs," he huffs out, taking a sip of it." Shit.... I thought my ass was gonna die, and I'm in fucking shape."
"Nobody told you guys to follow us every step of the way. We were fine on our own."
"Well, the orders are to accompany you everywhere you go. So that's exactly what we're going to continue to do."
"It's annoying."
"Yeah, but it's life."
"Did you handle all the business you needed to deal with at school?" Kakucho slid himself onto the bar stool. He slowly swiveled himself around, observing both of the girls. "Can we check that off our list of things to do?" He asked.
"Yes, thank God. It was easy. I talked to all my professors and told them I was moving states."
"Well, that's good." He turns back over to see Lani leaning on the armrest of the loveseat, looking over a few pieces of paper. Her usual cool calm demeanor slowly faded as she continued sorting through the letters in complete disgust. One after the other. "And what about you?" She looked anxious, tapping on her cup as she stared out the balcony sliding glass door. She was deep in thought, almost as if she were in distress, waiting for something. Or if she had a question on the tip of her tongue, she just wasn't quite ready to ask yet. Whatever it was, he definitely noticed the shift.
"Lani?" Kaku questioned, pulling her out of her daydream.
"Huh? Yes... what?"
"I asked if all your school stuff was handled. Or did we need to go back?"
"Oh—— oh yeah it's handled. I'm good, thank you," she whispers, trying to keep her composure as she neatly folds up one of the letters.
"Are you doing alright? You have been spacing out a lot today. And you've been quiet for the last few hours. Did something happen when you left earlier?"
"No I'm fine," she quickly shoves the letter into her pocket before setting her drink down on the coffee table. "I think I'm just drained like you guys." She sighs, taking a seat on the couch. "Glad it's over."
"You sure Nini?"
"Yeah yeah I'm good, it's just been a lot today," she smiles. "And on top of that, I talked to my sister earlier on the phone. She said my mom was back in town and wanted to see me and talk about selling the place."
"You have a sister?!" Benkei shouted.
"I do and a brother. I'm the middle child."
"Uh-oh, middle child syndrome. Okay, shit starting to make a lot of sense." Kakucho teases, plopping down on the couch next to her. "I can see it in the way you act."
"Shut up!"
"Your mom is back?! What the fuck! And they want to sell this place? Wait, why ?! We've been here for years!"
"Yeah. And I don't know. It's not really hers to try to negotiate. Dad gave me this place not her."
"Oh my god, you have to go see her! You have to talk to her about this!"
"I would rather not. It's not like we're staying anyways.""But still—"
"Is.... that like a rare thing or something?" Benkei asked. "I figured you guys were close since you had the photo, and you said you also wanted to see family."
"Yeah, well Lani and her mom are kinda complicated. You see she——-"
"Nai," Lani glares at her, crossing one leg over the other in exasperation. She really wished she would stop trying to tell everyone her personal business.
"Can you not? Please?"
"Oh... oh sorry Nini."
Lani exhales softly, reaching for her phone. She goes to DoorDash and starts scrolling through the restaurants. "It's fine. What do you want to eat?"
"Oooh can we have Mexican food?"
"Yeah, I'll order a bunch of stuff. But look, tomorrow we need to head over to our jobs and handle all of that shit over there. Today took longer than expected. Who knew you had to jump through all these hoops to drop out properly? This shit was honestly annoying."
"I was wondering why we had to go there to begin with. I thought you guys were done with medical school. Aren't y'all nurses already?"
