Goodbye Danny

Sam's POV

"You can go." You tell Eddie.

"Do you want me to?" He asks and you shake your head a little.

He hugs you as you try to keep your emotions pushed as far away as possible.

Your first face to face conversation with your dad since he left and he just walks away.

You let go of the hug.

"I need to go say goodbye to Danny." You tell him.

"I'll be here." He responds.

Your mom is inside hugging Danny tight as she cries a little.

Maybe you're more alike than you thought. Maybe she was acting so cold about him leaving to stop from breaking down herself.

She lets go and Danny looks a little confused.

"Bye-bye, mommy." He says and gives her a kiss.

"Bye, baby, I love you. Always." She says and squeezes him again.

"Sammy." He says.

He tries to take your hand to leave when she lets go again and it feels like your heart is being ripped from your chest.

"No, buddy." You say softly and kneel down to him. "I can't go with you this time."

He looks upset.

"Come on, Sammy." He says and takes your hand again.

"Listen, buddy. I love you. You'll always be my little buddy, ok? I'll always be your Sammy. I'm going to miss you so much." You tell him as you try not to cry so he won't as you hug him.

"Bye-bye, Sammy?" He asks.

"Bye-bye, Danny. You're going to go with dad."

"No!" He hugs you again.

"I'm sorry, buddy. I love you. I love you so much."

"Time to go." Dad says as Danny clings to you.

"What about his stuff?" You ask.

"Your mother and I already got it." He answers.

This time you can't stop the tears as Danny holds on when dad tries to take him, crying your name.

"Just let me take him to your car, ok?" You ask your dad as you hold onto Danny.

"Fine, but then we have to go and you need to get yourself in check." He replies.

"I'll go get the extra seat from your car." Mom says and heads out.

You follow your dad and Danny starts to scream more as you try to get him to let go and get him in his car seat. Once he's finally buckled, you give him one last hug and kiss his forehead before tearing yourself away. Your mom does the same as your dad sits in the rental van waiting. As soon as the door is closed he backs out and drives away.

Just like that, he's gone. You and mom standing, staring at where they left from and crying. If things weren't the way they are, maybe mom would have hugged you. You could have taken comfort in still having each other. Instead, she turns and heads back to the room.

"Go to school." She mutters and closes the door, locking it behind herself.

You're completely alone. Neither of your parents caring enough to even offer a hug or anything. You could have tried too but you knew it wouldn't happen.

Then you feel Eddie's arms wrap around you. His body warmth envelopes you in a comfort you aren't used to.

"I'm sorry." He whispers into your hair as you try to hold back your tears.
