"No I don't think you understand," Mili said, easily earning another laugh from me and my parents as we sat out on the back patio at the long dining room table.
The night was warm and the soft string lights managed to illuminate the large back patio perfectly—along with the shimmering stars that managed to reflect against the calm ocean.
Mili held up the half-eaten piece of pizza, "I want to eat more, but I'm so full," she finished her previous sentence, clearly at her own internal crossroads.
I hummed as I chewed my pizza, "Compromise—you can always save it to eat later. Best of both worlds," I determined.
Mili smiled slightly, looking over at me as I sat beside her on the long bench, "See this is why..." she trailed off, suddenly taking a hesitant pause.
And it was clear that she was thrown for an internal loop, which easily made my own brows furrow.
Well until she managed to finish off her previous statement by saying, "You're the best girlfriend ever."
I hummed, even if I still felt confused at her momentary pause, "How can I be the best when you exist?" I jokingly nudged her as I wiped my hands on my napkin.
And the question alone earned a narrowed look from Mili, who clearly disagreed.
My mom suddenly laughed as she sipped her rosé wine across from us, "You guys have the most wholesome arguments," she determined.
My dad nodded as he poured himself some more of the pink sparkly beverage, "Meanwhile, your mom and I argue over what color our sheets should be," he joked.
Mili shook her head with an amused smile, "That's easy—Lina's choice is always right," she deemed.
My dad chuckled, "I tried that, but then she gets upset when I don't have my own opinion," he pointed out.
Mili suddenly looked to me, "Sounds like someone I know," she determined with a raised brow.
I couldn't help but purse my lips into a smile, suddenly looking over at my mom who side eyed my dad as she sipped some more of her drink.
"Anyways..." my mom said as she swallowed her bubbly wine, "There's supposed to be a bonfire tonight—Kiara might be there."
I smiled slightly at the mention of my childhood best friend, "Aw how is Ki?" I asked, knowing that she stayed back to take a gap year.
As far as I knew, she was working the surf shop, and on her days off she was out practicing surfing—which she loosely mentioned taking seriously.
I always believed she could.
My dad smiled, "She's good—we see her every week and somehow her surfing still gets better," he said.
My smile grew, "That's always good to hear—" I suddenly looked to Mili, "—You up for a little bonfire action?"
Mili jokingly scoffed, "Is that even a question? You know I am," she said, suddenly rising from the bench, which easily caused me to follow suit.
However, before we could fully leave to go get dressed my mom suddenly said, "Wait!"
Just like that, we were both turning back around.
"Take this—" she handed me the unopened bottle of rosé wine, "You know you don't show up empty hand to a bonfire here," she said as I took the wine.
I hummed, "Thanks—I'll see you guys later," I said as both Mili and I turned back around.
"Probably in the morning, we might head over to that beach bar that your mom loves," My dad called out as we entered the air-conditioned house.
