The Paths in the Wood
I followed dim and silent paths
To the heart of the lonely wood
Where the flickering light with dappled shafts
Lit the shadows where I trod.
I entered the wood with heavy tread
And sad and weary mind,
I knew not where the pathways led
Nor the beauty I would find.
As I walked on thro' shadows dark
I felt my sadness ease,
And I heard the song of the gay skylark
Winging way above the trees.
Then the earth became springy beneath my feet
And my steps became firm and sure,
I breathed the smell of the woodland sweet
And my faith was restored once more.
I'll never know what strange whim
Guided my heavy feet
Along the pathways cool and dim
Deep in the woodland sweet.
But I will return when my spirits are low
To the pathways where I trod,
Yes I will return, this I know,
To follow the paths in the wood.
