Voices in the Night
You cannot sleep a wink although
You keep your eyes shut tight.
You cannot sleep because you hear
Voices in the night.
You snubbed a kindly friend today
Who called in for a chat,
And now you hear the voices say,
"Just why did you do that?
You lost your temper and you snapped
At someone you hold dear.
Oh, how you wish you could still
The voices that you hear.
You told a lie when someone asked
If you could lend a hand,
"You could have helped," the voices say,
"For you had nothing planned."
You listened to a rumour spread
By an accusing tongue,
The voice of reason tells you now
That someone got it wrong.
You know that as you toss and turn
Until the morning light,
'Twas your conscience that invoked
Voices in the night.
