The Lonely Shore
As I walked along a lonely shore
As sweeping tides grew near,
I watched white seagulls swoop and soar
And gazed in rock-pools clear.
There sea-shells lay like scattered gems
In trailing seaweed strands,
Wet pebbles shone like diamond
Where sea swept o'er the sands.
Beneath the tow'ring cliffs I found
Dim, wet, secret caves
And rocky sculptures all around
Carved out by the ceaseless waves.
In bright blue skies the white clouds made
Reflections in the sea,
A canopy of light and shade
That altered constantly.
The rocks, cave, the sea-sun kissed
The lovely sense of peace,
All those things I would of missed
Upon some crowded beach.
And someday in some quiet mood
I will return once more,
And walk again in solitude
Along a lonely shore.
