When I got back to the hotel room, the day's events felt like a ton of bricks on my shoulders, and the fact that it wasn't even over yet made it even more overwhelming.

Running into Levi had stirred up a lot of feelings, and the truth about hiding our kids had me feeling more confused than ever.

But as soon as I stepped inside, I saw Luke and Liam, my twin boys, playing with their toys on the floor.

Their laughter filled the room, a sweet sound that cut through all the mess inside my head.

"Mommy's back!" Luke shouted, his face lighting up as he ran over to hug me.

I scooped Luke up in my arms, giving him a tight hug. Liam joined in too, wrapping his little arms around my legs and grinning up at me.

"Hey, my little superheroes" I said, planting kisses on their cheeks, my eyes tearing.

"Did you have fun while mommy was out?" I said as I tried to act it cool.

They nodded eagerly, their eyes shining with excitement. As they got back to playing, I sat down on the couch, feeling comfortable just being around them.

But then, guilt hit me hard.

How could I keep such a huge secret from them? The truth about their father...

"Mommy, why are you sad?" Luke asked, his brows furrowing in concern as he looked up at me.

I forced a smile, trying to push aside my thoughts.

"Oh, it's nothing, sweetheart. Mommy's just a little tired" I replied, reaching out to ruffle his hair.

But Luke wasn't convinced.

"You were sad when you came back" he insisted.

I sighed, knowing I couldn't hide my feelings from them.

They were so aware for their age, and I knew I owed them the truth, even if it meant it wasn't going to be easy. But as a mom, it was tough to think about seeing them hurt.

"Come here, both of you" I said, waving them over to the couch. They jumped up excitedly and snuggled right against me as I wrapped my arms around them.

"Mommy has something important to tell you" I started, keeping my voice soft but with a hint of sadness.

"You remember when you ask mommy why your classmates have their daddy and ask where's yours?" I asked.

"But mommy, you didn't answer" Liam said.

"You look so sad that whole day mommy" Luke said, making me tear up.

"Really?" I asked, faking that I didn't know as a tear fell in my eye.

I quickly wiped my tears "Do I?".

"Yes!" Liam and Luke said in chorus.

"It hurts here mommy" Luke pointed at his heart.

"Yes! I felt it too!" Liam said, excited that his brother also felt the thing he felt.

"It feels like it's crushing!!" Liam continued, still excited.

I hugged them to hide my face as my tears burst out, before I pulled away I quickly wiped my eyes.

"I'm gonna tell you about daddy." I said trying to smile, and it seems that I did well hiding my sadness.

Their eyes widened with curiosity, and I could tell they had a million questions bubbling up inside them. How was I supposed to explain something so complicated to my two little bundle of joys?

"Daddy?" Liam asked softly, glancing up at me with wide eyes.

I took a deep breath, getting ready for the talk we were about to have. "Yes, daddy" I replied softly. "You see, your daddy... he's not here with us."

"Yes mommy, we know, why is that?" Luke asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.

"He doesn't love us Luke" Liam said as his eyebrows furrowed.

I held Liam's head and ran my thumb across his cheeks.

"It's not like that baby, your dad loves you two, so much." I insisted.

"Then, why is he not here?" Liam said as I still can see the anger in his eyes, I didn't mean to make them think like this to their father.

"It's... complicated," I said, searching for the right words. "But I want you to know that he loves you very much, even if he's not here."

"Where is he?" Liam asked, his voice small and uncertain.

"He's far away" I replied, my heart aching at the innocence in their questions. "But he's always thinking about you, just like mommy is."

The room went quiet as they tried to wrap their heads around what I was saying. I hated the idea of them feeling this pain, but the truth always finds a way to break through, no matter how hard I tried to hide them.

"Will we ever see him?" Luke asked, his eyes searching mine for reassurance.

"I don't know, sweetheart" I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

"But what's important is that we have each other. We're a family, and we'll always be there for each other, no matter what."

They nodded seriously, their understanding surprisingly deep for their age. In that moment, I was hit with a wave of love and gratitude for these two amazing children sitting next to me.

"Mommy loves you both very much" I said, pressing a kiss to the tops of their heads. "And I promise, no matter what happens, we'll get through this together."

As they cuddled up next to me, I realized that our bond was stronger than any problems. We were a family, together by love and strength, and nothing could ever change that. We'd take down whatever came our way.
