DAY FIVE of the Trial
The Labyrinth of Doom was aptly named due to the way it was set up. The dirt arena was raised several floors above the students' heads as well as below several meters underneath the surface. All of this was built in record time by three of UA's Support Department teachers—a termite heteromorph who taught the second-years, a mole-rat heteromorph who taught the third-years, and Power Loader who taught the first-years. The monolithic termite/molescape/hellscape city was filled with tall, muddy spires, dark caverns, winding tunnels, tar pits, quicksand, bogs, unstable bridges, and crumbling dirt stairs. Torches lit paths as vines, bushes, and small trees grew from within the clay of the building, creating an almost fantasy-like setting. Tiny aerial-bots equipped with cameras, night-vision, and sensors floated around ready to follow students once the game started.
"That thing probably has several hundred building code violations," Ochaco muttered as the remaining thirty-two contestants stood on the perimeter of the arena.
"Your family works construction, correct? This must be quite a treacherous environment then," Iida remarked beside Ochaco.
Katsuki gritted his teeth at the monstrosity. "It looks like a damn death trap!"
"ARE YOU ALL READY FOR THE NEXT EVENT???!!! IT'S THE LABYRINTH...OF DOOOOOOMMM!!!" Present Mic screamed as the crowd cheered along.
"Contestants! Let me explain the rules of this game," Mirko called out, the students looking up at the large, holographic schematic of the hellscape. "Inside lies a dragon's nest filled with twenty golden eggs. Your goal is to steal a golden egg and place it on one of these eight daises located all around the perimeter. Only the first eight that place their golden egg on the dias immediately qualify for the final event. However, danger lurks in every corner! Traps, dead ends, and your fellow contestants will hinder your search, so use your wits and best of luck! Oh, and one last thing...be careful of the monster that lives inside the labyrinth~! Mwah, hah, ha, haaa!"
The holographic screen then counted down from ten as the lights in the stadium dimmed. The majority of the light came from the sunlight above, giving the hellscape an eerie ambiance. Katsuki stood next to several of his classmates—Ochaco and Iida, as well as Shinso. He flexed his fingers and cracked his neck, fiercely grinning.
BRRRRR!!!
The buzzer blared, signaling the start. Thirty-two competitors rushed in at once, some faster than others—and more than half will lose. Katsuki knew he needed to get ahead for one main reason, so he made sure to lift off the ground and forgo taking the stairs.
"OH NO! IT LOOKS LIKE TODOROKI HAS FROZEN NEARLY HALF THE COMPETITION! THOSE WHO COULDN'T ESCAPE FAST ENOUGH GOT STUCK RIGHT AT THE START! AND HONENUKI HAD THE SAME IDEA! TWELVE CONTESTANTS ARE CURRENTLY DOWN. LET'S SEE IF THEY CAN GET OUT!"
"Hey!" Ochaco yelled, looking down below her as she floated towards the hellscape. Shinso had wrapped his capture weapon around Ochaco's leg.
"Sorry, Uraraka. I didn't have any other choice if I didn't want to get stuck in the mud," explained Shinso.
Ochaco merely raised an eyebrow in response. "Okay. Hold on tight," she said, continuing onward with Shinso dangling below.
Katsuki used his explosions to swerve around the two, then passed several spires before landing in a small clearing he deemed safe. Iida zipped to his location, stopping right beside him as dirt went airborne in his wake.
"Hmm. There are many entrances, but any one of them could lead us to a dead end. Which would be the best option?" Iida asked Katsuki.
"The hell would I know? I just got here! And why are you following me?"
