Chapter 13: Mask Of Sorrow

[Y/n's PoV]

The flashback ended, and I am back at the present.

I could see that Bosacius was really serious on sacrificing himself for me to be able to escape from that place. Despite me, insisting to not accept such sacrifice, he was still going to force it onto me. It was really sad to see him go but he made his own choice about that.

"Bosacius..." I whispered under my breath.

I can hear the voices of Xiao and Morax talking to me, but I was still in shock upon hearing what happened to Bosacius when I made contact with my yaksha mask.

I looked over at the two of them with a saddened expression.

"I think I now know what happened to Bosacius..."

I began to tell them what had happened when I was in that flashback.

"At first, I had thought that I had finally went insane due to the karma that had taken over me. However, when I regained my sanity, Bosacius was there in the deepest part of the Chasm that was already sealed off."

"Despite that, the thing that made me the saddest was about the decision that he had made when he took to sacrifice himself for me in order to get me out of that place."

Morax and Xiao just listened intently and could only think about the sacrifice that he had made for me.

"Hmm, something doesn't add up." Xiao said before continuing.

"I've looked over to the surface of the Chasm and its underground from time to time— including the place to where I found you earlier, but I always came back empty handed."

"Although I could somehow feel a tiny bit of your presence when I'm always there yet I couldn't point to where exactly. Well, I didn't really knew the answer to that but this information alone is really intriguing considering how my senses of perception is really good." He explained.

Hmm, it was rather strange to think about now that he mention it. If Xiao kept coming back, and could never point out a direction to where my presence was, perhaps something was preventing him from getting closer to me.

"...Perhaps Yingxue's body got consumed by the miasma inside the Chasm yet her consciousness and will to survive remains strong to the point that it was still fighting the evil that's corrupting her mind without her knowing. Moreover, it could be possible that Yingxue's memory loss was due to this." Morax interpreted.

As expected from the Lord of Geo. But I still have a question in mind and looked at him.

"If that's the case, why do I still have my physical body at this moment considering that kind of outcome?" I asked him, a bit confused.

"Good question..." Morax paused for a moment before he began to explain the case in a way that I could understand.

"It seems that you did managed to survive thanks to your strong willpower and consciousness, despite your physical body being consumed by the miasma. This alone is really fascinating on how you have managed to stay alive in the depths of the Chasm— perhaps there was a reason you kept on fighting."

He then tapped his chin, thinking what to say next.

"And for why you still maintain your physical body... The memory you had with Bosacius occurred five hundred years ago, and you didn't know what happened next after he transported you, yes?"

I answered him with a short nod as I let him continue.

"During that time, Bosacius knows well that your body was extremely weak and all of your adepti energy were all used up hence this led to one reason. He lets your body put to a rest without anyone disturbing it while at the same time, he lets your mind wander all over the place until your body was finally able to regain all of its strength back."

I listened intently to his explanation and nodded again.

"In that memory, there was... a person that I kept on thinking about other than you, Rex Lapis. Despite of me, calling out that person's name before I went on a killing spree, I couldn't recall who it was exactly."

When I said this, it had made Morax and Xiao think about what I'm talking right now. There was really someone that was very much special on my mind that I couldn't stop talking.

"Perhaps you two may have an idea who's that person my past self was referring to..?" I asked them.

Morax and Xiao shared an uneasy glance upon hearing this from me, it's like they're debating something whether or not they should tell me the identity of that certain person I keep mentioning on. Ultimately, Morax spoke up this time

"To answer your question, perhaps we have figured out who the person you're referring based on the information you have given us, but that revelation is something we cannot tell you for now."

What..?

I furrowed my eyebrows in response.

"Why..?"

"The time is not right yet... you will know it yourself when the right time comes..." Morax then looked around for a brief second and then looked back at me.

"But for now... you will need to recover and that is enough for us to be concerned."

I was quite confused upon hearing this since it seems that they still insist on not revealing to me whom I was referring to back then.

Perhaps seeing the curiosity written on my face, Morax spoke to me.

"Please just have faith in me and I promise that you will find all the answers that you're looking for once you set foot in Fontaine and then look for a blonde traveler along with her companion in your upcoming journey."

"As a yaksha, your sole purpose is nothing more but to purge all evil in this land, but time has changed and it was nothing like your past have seen as of today. Now, all I ask for you, Yingxue, is to seek for the truth in the land of Justice. Rest assured, I'm giving you my permission in doing so."

Morax then paused for a moment to let me process this information before he continued.

"In addition, I no longer hold the title of an Archon nor the name Rex Lapis or even Morax. Now, I am merely a god who disguises himself as a mortal in the human society."

"Huh? But Rex Lapis–"

"Please, do address me as Zhongli now. I have already ended my reign as an Archon by faking my death in front of my people years back."

He nods at himself before turning around as his back faces me.

"I must bid you farewell now for I need to take care of a few businesses left. Xiao, I'll leave Yingxue to you for today."

Xiao nodded in response as Morax left the both of us.

"...I'm glad you're safe." Xiao muttered that was enough for me to hear.

"...It's been a while, Alatus— that's what I've been addressing you in the past yes? Even if my memories of you are still blurry, I could sense that you're willing to protect everyone you cherish despite the aura you're giving to the people around you."

"And thank you, for rescuing me back at the Chasm. You're truly a wonderful big brother to have— just like Bosacius."

He hummed and crossed his arms at me.

"I just did what I should have, that's all." Xiao just waved the topic off and a smiled slightly.

Then, he looked at me one last time before patting my head.

"Welcome back, Y/n..."
