Chapter 19: Curtains Rise

[Furina's PoV]

As the sun was rising, I remained curious about who the defendant was, and at the same time, also anxious about the entire situation because I wasn't fond of court trials at all now that I'm just only a mortal.

I had a feeling that there was something else that Neuvillette isn't telling me. It was like there's another reason why he's so persistent of having me involve myself with this trial.

I then clutched my chest as tears started falling from my eyes. Every night, even if I'm no longer acting as an Archon, I still weep on my bed into thinking of why didn't I answer Y/n's confession back then... In the end, I just regret the chance that I didn't take; afraid... of Y/n letting fall in love to someone like me— a pathological people pleaser...

I let out a small sigh and wiped my tears away before deciding to just let it all go for now and focus my time on the actual trial. It'll be only for about a few hours anyway, and after that, I can move on to my regular lifestyle and activities such as being Fontaine's superstar and sometimes being a director of some films; yes, this will only just be a one-time situation.

Before the trial begins, and everyone has sat at their places, I was on my seat as well awaiting for the trial to begin, and was still very curious on who the defendant was.

I had put on such a serious expression, waiting for the trial to begin so that I could finally begin with my work that Neuvillette asked me to do. I could also sense a tense atmosphere as everyone has waited for the trial to begin.

"Huh, i-is that Lady Furina..?!" The man who's on the other side of the court asked in disbelief. Perhaps he never would have guessed that I'm his rival for today's trial.

"Huh, so this guy must be Neuvillette was talking about." I muttered.

I wondered that even though the man was acting as his own attorney, I still have a feeling that I'm about to encounter something much much different in this case.

"What? Lady Furina will serve as the attorney of the defendant? Now this is a true sight to behold."

The people below the court began talking and whispering to one another.

With everyone's eyes looking towards me at this moment, I also felt the stares that were on me, though I remained silent, not even showing the slightest interest.

Amidst the crowd though, I noticed Clorinde sitting one of the seats below and wondered.

What is she doing here..?

Clorinde's eyes were locked onto mine once she realized that she had spotted by me. She sat in one of the seats below with a neutral expression.

She didn't say a thing. But her gaze on mine was unsettling and piercing. It's like she's studying me for some reason. I simply ignored her gaze and instead just focused my attention on Neuvillette since the trial is about to begin for a few more minutes.

As Neuvillette explained the situation of how and why the defendant was put into trial, I made sure to remember every detail. I tried my best to pay attention to everything that Neuvillette is saying and every detail or information that I could provide to assist in the trial.

Neuvillette then gaze at Clorinde to where she gets the signal and left before Clorinde came back with a human cage that is covered on white sheets which made me and the people curious.

"Huh? Now what is that human cage that Clorinde has brought with her? I've never seen anything like 'this' before, just what is Neuvilette planning to do with this..?"
