Chapter 13: 15 Years & Unforgivable Sights
When I found out about my mother's accident, I didn't know what to think. Fifteen years is the amount of time I haven't seen this woman. Fifteen years is the amount of time I could have seen this woman, but I didn't. In the span of fifteen years, there could been a difference in this broken family.
As I was standing there in silence, I heard the heart rate monitor. That was the only thing that kept me in reality. Then I saw her finger move. I pinched myself to check if I was hallucinating. Maybe I pinched myself a little too hard.
"Wa..ter." She said, opening her eyes.
"Y-yeah, here's a cup of water." I stuttered, filling up a cup with water and giving it to her slowly before pressing a button and saying, "Doctor, she's awake!"
The doctor comes in a couple minutes later and checks her vitals after taking out the tube going through her throat. She was okay, but had to be kept at the hospital for a couple more days for observation. I was surprised to be the one to see her awake first. I mean, what does a guy say to a woman he hasn't seen for fifteen years?
Everyone was waiting outside while Lucy was in there. After Lucy came out, I went in and told Kaylie to stay put until I would introduce her. The weird thing is that I've never introduced Kaylie to my mother. I kind of felt nervous, you know? Because my father was the one that met and approved of Kayles, but not my mom. Shouldn't the mom be the one doing that before the dad?
"You remind me a lot of your father," was the first thing she said to me. "Handsome as ever." She chuckled at the thought.
"I honestly don't know what to say after fifteen years, mother." I spoke quietly. There was no need to be hostile at this time. "I'm glad you're alright."
"How did you know about the accident?"
"Lucy came to the cottage."
"Well, I'm glad she went over there. Fifteen years... I thought I'd never see you again."
"So did I, but look what brought us together, huh?" We both laughed.
"I'm glad you're here, Calvin. What have you been up to these past years?"
"Oh you know, parties, college. The usual things a twenty year old would do. Community college first to save money, then went to Harvard if you haven't been informed."
"Harvard? That's amazing."
"Yeah... Not much has happened over the past years, you can say. You didn't miss too much from me besides graduating high school."
"Ah, that couldn't be true. No girls? With that handsome face of yours?"
"Well, there was.. Is this girl. I made a mistake during senior year. I found her two years later with a slob of a boyfriend. They broke up before coming to Boston. She's pretty hard to get through to."
"Oh? You mean she's here... With you?"
"Yeah, I uh.. I'm sorry I kind of sprung that onto you pretty quickly. This mother figure thing is kind of new to me at the moment."
"It's okay. I'd like to meet the special girl." She smiled. I took that as a que to get Kaylie in here. The nervousness started to come when Kaylie came through the door and closed it.
I took a deep breath. Here goes nothing. "Mother, I'd like you to officially meet my girlfriend, Kaylie Casilla. Kaylie, this is my mother-"
"Clarissa Cameron," Kaylie spoke, her jaw tightened. My mother's smile faded away.
