Chapter 1: Past & Present
December 8, 2016
Today marks 3 months of being a sophomore in college! Yes, being a college girl is kinda stressful, but it's actually worth it. You wanna know why? Because I might actually get to transfer to Harvard University, MY DREAM SCHOOL. You know what that means..... This calls for a drink of wine and some of Mom's famous chocolate chip cookies! Well... You know what else is today? It's been 2 years since my heart was shattered by the one and only Calving Austin. But you know what? It's okay, because I have my dreams way ahead of me, I might actually get into Harvard, and Mom is actually letting me drink tonight! So no, I am not crying over that egoistic, jerk. Anyway! It's time for my reward from Mom.
- Goodnight for now! xo

4 Days Later
"Kaylie, there's something in the mail for you from Harvard!" Mom yelled, walking in from getting the mail.
I jumped up from the couch and walked over to her. Okay, maybe not walk, but you know the adrenaline rush when you feel like something exciting is gonna come up? Well that's what I was feeling at the very moment. You see, Harvard is my definite dream school. Obviously you can see that, so I'm just gonna... yeah.
My mom handed me the big yellow envelope. Whatever was inside this had to be a rejection letter or a letter of acceptance. I took a deep breath and took out a fancy looking paper and read the firsrt couple sentences out loud to my mom:
"Dear Ms. Casilla:
On behalf of the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid, we are all delighted to welcome you a spot in Harvard Class of 2020. Following Harvard tradition, a certificate of admission is enclosed. You are to report to the university and admission office by no later than December 15th."
No way.... Oh my gosh, this is really happening! I, Kaylie Marie Casilla, will be a business student... IN HARVARD. Holy crap, this is so surreal right now. I guess this took me a long time to process it because Mom snapped me out of my thoughts.
"K.C. this is amazing! Your dream is finally coming true!" She exclaimed and hugged me.
"Oh my gosh.." I said. "MOM! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?"
"What?"
"I'M GONNA BE A BUSINESS STUDENT AT HARVARD!" I smiled at the thought.
"I'm so proud of you, Sweetheart! Your father and Kris would be so proud." My smile turned into a grimace.
The thought of my father still gets to me. He was the best. That is until he died. After my dad's passing, my brother, Kris, had left and I honestly didn't know why or where he went off to, but it's just me and Mom now, and we couldn't have been any closer than we already were. I never really like to talk about my dad or brother because it was a touchy subject. I've always wanted to find Kris, but the last thing I knew was that he was in another country and stopped to replying any of my letters.
"Mom," I started, "can we visit Dad? I wanna tell him the big news."
"Of course, Sweetie. I'll go get the keys."
A/N: Sooooooo, this is the first chapter!
