Chapter 14: Consequences & Change
Cal's POV:
"She's the woman that killed my father."
Those were the most horrendous words I could have ever heard. Maybe I should have never visited this woman, but that way, I would have never actually known what happened to Kaylie's father until right now. I didn't know what to think about this so I kind of just stood there, shocked.
My mother killed Kaylie's father. If I had it my way, I would have never come to visit, but I did anyway. This would save so much hurt and so much confusion.
"Hey guys, I brought some coffee." Lucy came in a bit after, but stopped in her tracks when she felt the tension. "What's going on?"
"Well, dear, I've just officially met your brother's girlfriend." Mother answered. "Not so much of a meeting, though."
"I'm not so sure I understand. Am I missing something here?" Lucy place the try of coffee cups onto the side table. I sat down trying to take in everything at the moment.
"You don't know either, do you?" I asked.
She turned to me. "Cal, what's going on?"
"Our mother... apparently killed Kaylie's father." Lucy's eyes became wide as she looked back at the lady in the hospital bed.
"Mom?" Her voice cracked.
"It happened 4 years ago, Lucy." Mother answered.
"Why did you do it?"
"Because the man I was having an affair wanted me to do so. I was killing a man I didn't even know. God forbid, had I known the real reason for his plan, I would have turned him in and left instantly." Tears were rushing down everyone's faces.
"That's not what you told the police," Kaylie intervened, making everyone look at her.
"What do you mean that's not what she told the police?" Lucy probed, urging Kaylie to explain more.
"You told the police you were poisoned. You lost your memory, that you thought you were married to the man. Who are you trying to fool, Clarissa?"
"Kaylie-" I called, but she interrupted.
"No, I'm not done yet." She choked out.
"Kaylie, I'm so sorry." Mother apologized.
"You can keep apologizing all you want, but sorry is not gonna bring my father back."
"Kaylie, let's go." I stood up and grabbed a hold of her before she could do anything.
"Let's go."
I took one last look at my mother and Lucy before I left.

Kaylie's POVWhen we left the hospital, the car ride home was quiet. The tension wasn't too much for me, but I couldn't help but feel guilty for what I'd said. Normally, I wasn't like that to people. I wouldn't be surprised if Cal hated me for saying any of the things I'd said. Then again, I wouldn't take back what I said.
Once we reached the cottage, Cal stayed in the car for a bit longer as I went inside. I walked to the studio out back and just sat on the ground, contemplating whether to apologize to Cal. By then, the guilt was starting to get to me, so I closed the studio up and walked inside the house to look for Cal. I searched through the house, but didn't find him, just a note saying he was out. I called him, but no answer.
This was such bad timing for all of us with me starting school soon and Cal and I getting a fresh start at us. I've already checked in and got my schedule, but I wasn't starting any classes until the spring semester, and thankfully I got my wish for day classes.
