MILE'S POV
"One more, Rooster." Lina said and I pushed through another push up.
"One more." She said.
"Elbows in." She said quickly as she saw I was cheating. I fell to the floor and groaned as I was done.
"I hate you." I said and she chuckled.
"You won't be when you are pulling 8Gs, then you will thank me." She said and I got up.
"Maybe." I said and smiled softly.
"Hey, what I told you guys the other night, it can't come forward that you know." She said and I nodded.
"My lips are sealed." I said and she smiled gently.
"Thank you." She said.
"Have you never thought about following your dad's footsteps?" I asked as I took a sip of my water.
"I did sort of." She said.
"I followed one of his character's footsteps. She said and I smiled softly.
"But yeah, no. Acting is not for me." She said.
"Permission to ask something personal?" I asked and she chuckled.
"Yeah, sure." She said.
"You and your dad seem a little tense around each other, anything going on?" I asked, still out of breath and she let out a chuckle.
"That's one way to put it." She said.
"He's a great dad, when he is there. But, work is his life." She said.
"And so is it for me too." She said and I nodded, not wanting to push it too far. We still barely knew each other.
"It's like that for my siblings as well." She said.
"They workaholics as well?" I asked.
"No, but they are just as affected as me by his job. I don't know them. We all have different mothers." She said and I nodded.
"How about you? You close your eyes your parents?" She asked and I smiled softly.
"Yeah, I am. Me and my siblings have a great relationship, I'm very blessed." I said and she nodded.
"That's great." She said. I've been very fortunate to grow up with two loving parents, two sisters and grandparents who've always been around. Sometimes it hits me that not everyone has it like that. Things can be a lot more complicated.
"Dad and I have barely spoken in 1,5 years so it's no surprise it's tense." She said.
"Woah." I let out and she chuckled.
"He's been occupied and so have I. I guess I haven't put in a lot of effort to keep him in the loop of what's happening in my life, can't blame it all on him." She said. I could see the similarities between them. Both equally dedicated to their jobs, quite stubborn, hardcore, thrill seeking and adventurous.
I don't know but there was something about her that was just so, thrilling. I've met a lot of people through my job but she is by far the most intriguing one yet. She is just so mysterious. You know but you still don't know what she has done in her job. You hear the Navy and you know it's a dangerous and a hardcore profession. And when you hear she is the best fighter pilot out there you know she has done some serious stuff. It's like, I know she must've had killed someone but do I dare to ask? Nope. She just seems like she has a lot of layers. A wall built up around her. She is stiff but also not. She's a military woman. It's thrilling.
"You will work through it." I said and she let out a chuckle.
"Yeah, we'll see." She said.
"I know you think of him as adventurous and Mr. Mission is always possible but I know him in a different way than you do." She said and I nodded. She was right.
"And now you are stalling this workout and for that you will do 100 squats." She said and I chuckled.
"I'm serious." She said with a straight face and I nodded.
"Yes, captain." I said and started doing the squats.
After the workout I headed towards the cafeteria for some lunch. My colleagues were already there. I couldn't help but think about what she had said about her dad. I never suspected Tom being distant with his kids. He just seemed so caring and involved. I grabbed some food and sat down.
"How was the workout?" Glen asked in the middle of a bite.
"Brutal." I said and he chuckled.
"She forced me to do 200 push ups and 100 squats." I said and he chuckled again.
"That is what happens when you miss a workout session." He said and I gave him a glare.
"You think she has a lot of trauma?" I asked and they all looked up at me.
"Yeah, I mean she is a fighter pilot." Glen said.
"From what I heard has she been both in Iraq and Afghanistan, plus special detachments like Mission Valley." Lewis said.
"Every soldier has trauma." Monica said.
"But it doesn't seem like she has any PTSD though." Greg said.
"How would you know?" Monica asked in a "duh" tone.
"I don't, but she seems normal to me." He said.
"You can't see PTSD." I said and took a bite.
"She is tough like hell though. I wouldn't want to meet her in combat." Greg said and I chuckled. I saw Glen look at me with a little smirk and then let out a chuckle.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing." He said, still smirking.
"What is it?" I asked and he looked over at Monica and then back at me.
"Nah, just sounds like you are into her." He said and everyone else smiled and slowly nodded.
"Me?" I asked shockingly.
"Yeah." He said.
"You won't shut up about her and haven't since the first day on the program." He added.
"He's got a point." Monica said and I looked over at her.
"You too?" I asked and she chuckled.
"And.... she's way out of your league, my man." He said and they all chuckled.
"She totally is." Greg said.
"Assholes." I said and they all laughed.
As I took another bite of my food I wondered, were they wrong? Is that why I'm so intrigued to find out more about her? To get to know her better. I knew I liked her personality, she is a good person. And the mystery of not knowing who she really is or what she really has gone through was so intriguing and thrilling.
But was I into her? I don't know her well enough.
