A Random Saturday Night

I run a hand through my hair, feeling the mix of oil and product from how many times I've already ran a hand through it. Rikkard clears his throat and crosses his arms. My eye catches Jake dancing with a girl after one of the strobe lights hits them.

"This is stupid," Rikkard yells over the loud music, leaning in so I can hear.

I simply nod, not feeling like yelling back. This is indeed stupid.

Why did we agree to go with Jake to this random party? What possessed us to do this? Is it the desperate feeling of keeping a friendship I know is gone?

Nah, I'm not that emotional. But, I do feel like I've lost my Saturday night.

I turn to Rikkard lethargically. He turns to me with the same attitude.

We're bored.

I don't even think I know this school's name.

Rikkard walks through the house, and I follow him to the back garden. The two other people out here are passed out on one of the swings.

"Private school people are weird," Rikkard announces.

"What?" I ask, confused as hell. "Where did that come from?"

"Did you see that girl blatantly staring at us?" Rikkard scrunches his face up.

I think back. "Uh, I don't think so? Is she a private school kid?"

Rikkard sighs exasperatedly. "Dude, this party was hosted by private school kids. The house is massive. Jake said it was Athens Academy."

Oh.

"Yeah, I think I missed that," I laugh. "That must be why this whole thing sucks."

"Hey," Rikkard points a finger at me. "You're the one who used to be a private school kid."

I eye roll him. "Yeah, yeah."

It's quiet for a moment, and I can tell Rikkard has something in his mind. I wait for him to say something while I study the weird statues in the garden.

"I have feelings for Summer," Rikkard quietly reveals. "But I'm not sure how she feels about me, and I don't want to be rejected again."
