The drive back to my house is quiet in the beginning, both of us in shock.
Amber would do that to her best friend?
And neither Rikkard nor I missed the fact that West was laughing with Sam tonight after the game. I understand that best friend bonds are strong, but seriously? If Rikkard did something like that to me—which he would never do, anyways—I wouldn't be able to stay friends with him.
"Hey," Rikkard speaks up, leaning over the console. "You act like a love-sick buffoon with Nico. All cutesy and stuff."
I laugh without inhibition. "Dude, she's amazing. If she wants a cutesy guy, I'm gonna be that for her. She deserves the world."
"Not sure Nico would like being a world tyrant or world domination," Rikkard muses. "I fully support you, though. She is pretty amazing."
I shake my head, a smile growing as I think of Nico's amazing selflessness and awe at all the pretty things she sees.
Rikkard's voice cuts me out of my thoughts. "Hey, Nico's kind of acting like she's got feelings. Or that she's getting them."
"Yeah," I voice. "I've noticed a change. It was after the gala. I think it's just because she was mad at me for a couple days and feels bad, though. I know she's upset with herself about her avoidance. She wouldn't act like she is if she wasn't."
The rest of the drive is silent, but the second the door to my house opens, loudness prevails. We make some food and head into the living room, starting this movie Rikkard has been wanting to see.
The movie cuts to a jump scare, and not a minute later, a pounding on the front door startles us more, making us laugh at each other. Rikkard heads to get the door while I go in the kitchen to refill my water.
I hear some shuffling and a loud burst of laughter that isn't Rikkard's. I set my water down and leave the kitchen, finding Rikkard at the front door staring at Jake, who is bleary eyed and smiling.
"Jake?" I greet.
"Yep," He slurs. "Jake. Lemme in."
"No," I bite out harshly, stepping closer. "You're drunk."
"I ain't drunk," Jake spits back, his words messy. "I'm jus' a lit—little tipsy."
When Jake stumbles inside the house and almost knocks a vase over, Rikkard lets out a nervous gasp.
I grasp Jake by the arm and yank him back outside. "You are making Rike nervous. You know he hates drunk people. Leave."
Jake pushes past me, lunging into the house and grabbing hold of Rikkard. "No! Rike wants me here. You do, Rikkard."
