As the first rays of dawn stretched across the horizon, they penetrated through the thin veil of sleep that enveloped William. The soft glow of sunlight filtered through his eyelids, casting a warm hue of orange and yellow on his face.

He stirred slightly from the blankets wrapped loosely around him, now aware that it was morning: with the distant shouts and laughs of his kids from outside, the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze, and the occasional creaks and groans of the floorboards from the exterior of the small hospital room.

With a stretch, he swung his legs over the side of the bed. Opening his drowsy eyelids to the bright room, he blinked away the remnants of sleep, allowing his vision to adjust to the lights.

In a matter of no time, the giggles from outside died down and a familiar face peeped through the door to the room.

"Had a good rest hm?" Vincent's striking yet tender voice spoke, heaving himself up on the bed next to William.

William yawned gently, "It was okay, I guess.."

Vince nodded at his reply and leaned closer in, his gloved hand reaching to massage William's side.

He quickly stopped though as William let a harsh gasp out, flinching at his touch.

"I'm still sore, Vince.." He exhaled slowly, looking away in shame at the guilty look on the blonde man's face.

"Oh-, ah, well, I'm sorry," Vincent murmured, shuffling his hands in his lap now.

"Nono, don't apologize." William smiled briefly, leaning over and squeezing Vincent's wrist reassuringly.

Vincent only nodded again, his gaze still directed toward his lap.

...

"So, are you sure that there are no signs of possible infection at all?" Vincent questioned suddenly, his eyes hitting the scar on William's cheekbone.

William chuckled lightly, "Yes Vince, I'm going to be fine."

Vincent scoffed though, "Don't laugh about this, it's not funny."

"I'm not laughing about that." The black-haired man smiled, "It's just funny to see how worried you are for me now, I can't get one hour alone without you checking in on me."

"Well, you're still healing." The blonde let out a slightly annoyed sigh.

"I know it sucks, almost a month now and I still feel like shit," William grunted back.

"At least you're still alive," Vincent replied, his shoulder now touching the smaller man's.

..

They sat there in silence for a bit, enjoying each other's warmth and staring at the door. Both of them expecting the same person to walk through any minute now.

"When's Val coming? Didn't he say he found something important?" William asked abruptly.

Vincent nodded, "It's about you actually."

"Ohh, that's why both of you have been acting so strange around me." Will laughed, only meaning it in a joking manner.

The blonde's brow furrowed, irritated at the fact William wasn't taking any of this seriously.

"..And. He found some people back in Bristol, scientists or doctors, whatever they are."

William sighed dramatically, "And what else?"

"They are focused on making a cure for the infected, or something to give to people to make them immune to those fungus monsters. Now that you've been bit, more cases of others being attacked by these things are spreading like wildfire." Vincent added on, a worried expression etched on his face.

William bobbed his head slowly, realizing something.

"Well, did those people get infected from the venom?" He queried.

"..Yes," Vincent answered.

"Every single one of them?"

"Yes, all of them."

William's joking smile dropped slightly, "But I was bit."

"Yes, you were." Vincent's gaze was on the ground.

"And I'm not infected." Leaning his head down to stare sternly into Vincent's eyes.

"No, you aren't."

......

William looked away, recounting every possibility.

"Does that mean..?" He gasped gently, his eyes hitting the now-healed scar on his elbow.

"You're immune."
