Y/N caught up to Cedric after his potions class was over. "Hey, Cedric." She greeted quietly the boy who stood in front of her. "Good evening," He replied with a soft smile. "I... I wanted to apologise for my behaviour a week ago," The girl spoke, her voice still low. "Oh, you wanted to apologise for that?" Cedric asked with a small chuckle. "I forgave you the moment you left the tower. It was my fault, you know. I shouldn't have forced anything on you," The Hufflepuff student replied, soon grabbed in a hug. "Thanks, Ced," The girl mumbled to his chest and sighed in relief. Cedric sighed as well, knowing the girl didn't suspect his little lie on the bet. George passed the hugging pair, both of them not noticing his presence. The redhead scoffed in annoyance as he eyed the girl who had been ignoring him for the past week. George's sleep schedule was messed up, and the ignoring from Y/N was eating him alive.

The late June day was warm and full of murmurs due to the last Triwizard Tournament task. Every student was excited, many appearing at the hedge maze spectating area hours before it began. Y/N looked around the hallways frantically, hoping to find Cedric. Unlike other students, the girl was nervous as she sensed something was wrong. She gave up searching as Y/N guessed the boy was getting ready at the participants' tent. The evening rolled around quickly much to her dismay. Y/N, Hermione and Ron were walking slowly to the edge of the hedge maze, the girl purposefully delaying the trio's arrival. "Come on, Y/N. Can't you move quicker?" Ron urged with annoyance. "Sorry. I'm just... I don't feel well about this task." She replied and looked at the huge maze. "It's fine. Look, we got the seats in the front row!" The boy exclaimed and sat down with a loud thud. Y/N eyed the small field before the maze and saw Cedric, jumping up instantly and almost running to him. "I got worried already!" The girl exclaimed as she backed away from Cedric's embrace. "Sorry, sweetheart. I was too focused on the task," The boy replied with a smile. Just then, Dumbledore appeared on the field and eyed the participants to make sure they were ready. Suddenly, Y/N kissed Cedric's cheek, both the boy and the girl blushing. "Good luck," She mumbled and left the grass, joining Hermione and Ron on the benches.

"What was that?" Hermione asked half yelling when Harry and Cedric disappeared into the maze. "I don't know!" Y/N replied with a smile. "What about George?" The girl asked again, confused as her brows were furrowed. "It's a long story, but George decided to make a Quidditch trophy, placing a bet on who won the game gets to take me on a date," Y/N explained and gained Ron's attention. "I might hate my brothers but I think that George has enough manners to not do something... so rude?" The boy said as he looked at Y/N. "Did you ask him about it?" Hermione questioned. "No?" The girl replied as her thoughts went wild. "Shit," She mumbled. "You two will deal with it later. Focus on the show before us," Hermione added, a hand placed on Y/N to keep her in place. "What was that?" George asked his twin, who stood next to him, displaying the exact same emotion - shock. "I honestly have no idea, George," Fred replied, mouth still open. "I will k-" George's burst of rage was stopped by Fred's strong grip. "No. You'll just screw it up. You can talk it out with Y/N and Cedric later," He added and sat the boy down. "Traitor," George mumbled, still raging on the inside.

The players had all entered the maze and it was time to wait in anticipation. An hour passed, and another one. Until Viktor and Fleur emerged from the maze, the girl ran to her headmaster as Viktor walked more calmly to his. She whispered something to Madam Maxime who then passed the message on to Dumbledore whose face dropped. The Hogwarts Headmaster disappeared quickly from the platform. "What's going on?" Y/N asked Hermione as they sat in silence. Harry was back in a second with Cedric next to him. The girl sighed in relief but Harry's actions made her tense up. "He's dead! Voldemort killed him! He's back!" The boy ranted, tears slipping out of his eyes as the professors ran to the pair. Y/N's breath got stuck in her throat, joining the crowd around Cedric. "Oh, Ced..." The girl muttered, tears falling in rivers. "My boy, my dear boy," Cedric's father collapsed next to his son as he grabbed the boy. Out of the corner of her blurry vision, Y/N saw Alastor Moody pull Harry towards the school building. The girl glanced at Cedric's stunned face before she stood up and left the grass field, going after Harry.

Every step the girl took her tears multiplied. Her first true friend was dead and the realisation hit her like a truck. Y/N's tries to wipe the tears away all failed as she stumbled up the stairs to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Moody and Harry still in her sight. The girl stepped into the class just at the right moment, her wand pointed at the professor who was morphing back to his actual self. "One more step and you will end up like Ced," She said with a shaky voice and earned a laugh from Barty Crouch Jr. "Aww, was little Ced dear to you?" The man mocked and neared her. "Long time no see, Y/N," He added and grinned crazily. Dumbledore, Snape and McGonagall entered the classroom, and McGonagall pulled the girl away before she could do anything. "It's alright," Minerva repeated, holding Y/N tightly. Her tears spilt again as she remembered Cedric's fateful end.

"Miss L/N?" Amos Diggory greeted the girl at the bridge in front of Hogwarts. "Good evening, Mr. Diggory," She replied with a small smile. "Please call me Amos," The man stood next to the girl behind the railing. "I'm so sorry for Cedric," Y/N said and turned to Amos, earning a nod. "I noticed you were close to Ced," The man began. "He always told about you every time he returned home," Amos continued and looked at Hogwarts for a moment. "Ced had big plans for you," Amos added and sighed in sorrow. Y/N didn't know what to say, unable to form any words at the new information. "Ced was my first best friend at school. I don't even want to know where I would be if he wasn't as kind as he was," The girl replied, breaking the silence. Amos smiled. "I'm certain you affected Ced a lot. In a good way, of course," The man said. "I shall go now. But I wanted to thank you personally," Amos added. "Thank me? Why? I wasn't able to save him," The girl questioned, slightly confused. "Cedric seemed really ecstatic after every encounter with you. I suppose you had a special place in his heart. I shall go now. Goodbye and... thank you again," Amos bid his farewell and walked away, leaving Y/N alone as she dried her tears.

The last assembly of the year was quiet, with no chatting or murmuring heard in the Great Hall. Dumbledore gave his usual speech yet this time it was in memory of Cedric. The whole school mourned his passing as Cedric was a good friend to many students. The students left the hall with no words exchanged, going back to their common rooms. Even though it was the evening and Y/N had to study, she chose not to. Instead, she went to the Courtyard and sat down on the same bench she had met Cedric at. George took a seat next to her. "I'm sorry," Y/N mumbled as the girl looked at the ground in front of her. "For what?" The redhead questioned, his usual playful tone replaced with a more neutral one. "For ignoring you. Cedric told me that it was your idea on the whole 'who wins gets the girl' ordeal," Y/N explained as her gaze averted to George, their eyes meeting. "It's alright. I would've acted the same way. But it doesn't matter anymore, does it?" He questioned as he placed his hand on hers. "I suppose. Are we friends again?" The girl asked, her voice full of fear. "We never stopped being friends," George replied simply and gave her a light smile. "Are you doing alright?" He questioned. "I'm..." Y/N stopped and sighed. "I'm fine. It's hard, knowing my first friend here is no longer here but... He's in a good place now," She finished and wiped a tear. "What about you? You seemed to be close to him too," The girl asked. "He was my year mate, of course, I was close to him but I think I'm fine as well," George replied and grabbed her in a hug. Her falling tears were soaked up by his shirt. "Are you still planning on coming to The Burrow?" The redhead asked as he held her. Y/N nodded her head in response. "It's the only thing that will lessen the sadness," She replied and sighed.
