It was so easy to forget the ugliness of life when times were good, but no matter how much they wished it to be untrue, the life of a hero was never one that would remain blissfully unburdened. 

Rin Hiryu's trial date was upon them before any of them were prepared. 

Shinso hadn't needed to be informed he would be a key witness in its preceding. It had practically been a given considering their closeness, yet that did not remove the blindingly painful sting of having to walk up on the stand and testify against one of his best friends. However, what made everything tolerable was that in the pews were all of the night shift crew. Fumikage was there in his solid black suit and unwavering serious expression. Kuroiro had attempted to slick back his white hair, but its unruly colorless lengths kept poking straight up like alfalfa and giving Tetsutetsu something to mother throughout the entire trial. Next to them were Denki and Fae; the two halves of his heart. 

As the unnecessarily snailish pace of the government trial drug by, months passed in the blink of an eye. On the first day of court Fae had been able to wear her Miss Fate press conference cream outfit, but now at the final hearing, her belly was swollen near to its limit beneath the flowing yellow skirt Denki was busy talking to encessantly despite being shushed by the judge countless times. 

Even though he was sitting on the stand yet again to hear the inevitable life sentence in Tarturous Rin was about to be slapped with, his mind couldn't be farther from the infernal region. Instead, Shinso's gentle droopy purple eyes were creased with his smile as he watched his beautiful lovers kiss one another softly before both looking his way and giving them their respective love-filled signs. 

It wasn't until that gavel slammed in finality that Shinso realized everything had ended. 

"Everyone rise," the bailiff called out one last time as the judge exited the court. 

Shinso stood tall beside the army of lawyers the hero agency threw at Rin, but despite the plethora of people waiting for him to be escorted out, it was Hitoshi Rin sought out. In chains binding every limb twice over, Rin's approach was far from silent as he was led toward the persecution. 

The withdrawal from Profit had taken its toll on Rin's face. His cheeks were gaunt, his lips cracked and bleeding, and his black hair thinned near bald. But Shinso didn't feel pity for him because there was a tiny twinkle of relief in Rin's once again black eyes. "Hey, I-I'm..." his voice broke, and Shinso clenched his teeth to stop any emotion from welling up inside himself, "I'm...sorry."

Shinso's jaw clicked was anger, but it wasn't just at Rin. It was the whole fucked up situation. 

Rin's aged face wrinkled as he smiled tiredly. "I will never ask for your forgiveness because I don't deserve it, but someday...if you could swing by to let me apologize just once...I'd...I'd like that."

Hitoshi's midnight black lashes clenched shut, trying to block the site of his friend finally resurfacing in the face of the drug-changed man who had tried to murder him. "I-I don't...know if that's possible."

"That's fair," Rin murmured brokenly. 

There came a loud girlish squeal from behind him, and Shinso whipped around to see his boyfriend was the one who had made the sound. Kaminari had saucers for eyes as he was staring at the ground, but Shinso knew better than to trust Kaminari's panic because he had seen the man make the same adorably over-the-top reaction when he dropped his piece of bubble gum once. 

"U-ummmm Toast..." Fae called out across the deathly silent courtroom. Her entire body was shaking as she whispered, "It's go time."

Shinso was frozen in horror at realizing what had just happened. The newest member of the family seemed to take after its mom based on their love for dramatics, but Shinso couldn't really appreciate that right now because he was trying to remember that he was supposed to be the level-headed one of their relationship. He couldn't have a full-on panic attack like the blonde man fluttering around Fae.
