"What were you two thinking?" I hissed at them as we sat in a row in the Great Hall for dinner.
"I just couldn't help it. She was so happy when I knew all the answers in class." Lily sniffled.
"You can't do this. I know you are tempted, believe me, I am too, but if we reach out to anybody, we'll become significant and the last thing we can afford is being seen, Merlin knows how many people we're going to have obliviate after all of this blows over. I still think we should've used Polyjuice."
"We could've but Al, I don't think you realize, we aren't stocked." James scolded. James' anger was more than just minor arguments and every moment that he would snap, I would wait for the next punch. His anger was justified and his distaste towards me was accurate. I knew he blamed me and so did I. Lily was just too kindhearted to see me in that light.
"Look, there they are." Lily pointed out and we looked at the teacher's table to find them sitting together and talking to Hagrid. Mum was laughing with Hagrid but Dad was lost. He seemed to be constantly thinking and by the look on his face, I knew what was running in his mind.
"Are you fed?" I looked at them. They nodded. I picked up the chicken piece in front of me and stuffed myself.
"We meld in this group of children and leave. Alright?" I looked at them. They nodded. As a group of ten stood to leave, we got up and followed, hiding in the crowd, being an unconsidered group.
When we reached an empty hallway, we wished for the Room of Requirement to open and headed in discreetly. The couches came into view and I felt like I could breathe again.
"What was she like?" I finally asked, sitting on the floor by the foot of the couch, near the fireplace.
"Kind. She told me to live my life because Mum and Dad sacrificed themselves for us to live on. She told me to celebrate Jackson's achievement and enjoy my years at Hogwarts." She smiled, staring at the fire cackle beside me, "When I asked her what her third year was like.. she said she was too worried about her husband because he was in the Triwizard Tournament."
"So he did fight a dragon?" I asked.
"Apparently, yeah." She laughed.
"What was he like?" I asked James again.
"Strangely, understanding. Not as hard as I thought he'd be. He heard me through and then seemed heartbroken when I told him about them."
"I talked to him too." Lil whispered, "I shook his hand and he looked at me with care. Like he knew who I was." She licked her lips, "But you met her too."
"Yeah, only brief to take you away before you cried and fell into her arms."
"Brief but what was it like for you?"
"Broken. I couldn't stand in front of her, so I just ran."
"It wasn't your fault." Lil gave me a concerned smile.
James didn't say anything.
"It was. And we all know it." I sniffed.
"You can face him. Just say hello in his class."
"No. I won't. I won't be able to." I rubbed my nose when it felt tingly.
"They deserved better. Our parents." James added, playing with his thumbnails. Lil leaned on his shoulder and sighed. Her tears began and my heart broke at that. As much as it annoyed me when she cried, I couldn't blame her in the moment.
