As the two of you got closer to the food court Steve could only think to himself about how stupid he was for not fighting you more on you paying for your new books, he wanted to buy it for you because he was very fond of seeing your bright smile as you read through the excerpt of the book you were interested in reading. He was going to make it up to you somehow and he was starting to figure out how he was going to start making up for it.
"Do you want to, maybe, take this to go and eat at the park nearby? Something a little more private," he spoke softly into the cusp of your ear causing a chill to run up your spine as his warm breath caressed your ear gently.
"That sounds like a lovely idea!" you whispered back breathlessly, knowing fully well that he had heard you loud and clear with his enhanced hearing.
"Perfect, why down we get some subs, chips and a drink to eat and we'll be on our way," Steve stated while placing a hand on your lower back and led you towards the sub shop that wasn't too far from where you were currently standing.
The two of you had ordered your food and as you were about to pull out your wallet to pay you heard the terminal beep in confirmation and you looked up quickly to see Steve smiling at you sheepishly.
"You didn't have to do that," you told him gratefully.
"I wanted to since you wouldn't let me pay for your books," he laughed softly at your now shy demeanor.
"I just don't want you to think I'm using you and I have the money so it's okay, you don't have to," you pushed slightly even though you knew that he was going to be stubborn about this."Let me treat you. You don't have to worry about it, I want to do this," he urged and grabbed the bag of food from the counter with his right hand and grabbed your hand with the other. You shyly let him hold your hand, and followed him back out to the SUV. He kept his head held high, like he was proud that he was holding your hand, but you were still having your own doubts. People were recognizing him again, and you went to take your hand back, but he held it firmly, almost as though he never wanted to let go.
He let go of your hand long enough to open the doors for you, and when you got to the SUV he opened that door too. You hopped in and he put the food on the dashboard before he clicked your seatbelt into place. You couldn't help but giggle at the way he was acting, but was doubling down on acting sweet again. You took the bag of food and put it on your lap while he ran around and got in the driver's seat.
"Anywhere specific you like to go?" Steve asked curiously and you shook your head. "Good, I'll take you to one of my favorite spots," he grinned and turned the ignition. "I hope the fans thing didn't bother you" he finally said after a few minutes of silence while he continued to navigate traffic.
"No, not at all" you shook your head. "You looked like you were having fun" you gave a smile.
"No, not at all" he disagreed quickly. "It's kind of weird to be popular like this, and having people crowd me when I go out. I'm not that ideal Captain America. I'm really just Steve Rogers, this kid from Brooklyn that couldn't walk away from a fight" he gave a lopsided smile. "Bucky helped me more often than not, and I was so happy when he got his mind back and joined the team. He still treats me like I'm just Steve. So does the rest of the team. But the general public seem to forget I'm just a man."
"I see you as both a hero and as a man. I think you are walking that thin line between fame and a normal life. At least at the compound you can have that normal life" you sighed.
"You see me as a hero?" he asked quickly.
"Yes, for everything you do. Of course. I see the entire team as hero's. But I know you are all just people too, that's why I don't mind that we are separated at the compound. It seems important that you guys get to just be yourselves and not have to wear a mask all the time" you shrugged.
"You don't treat any of us differently," Steve said quickly, trying to get a read on you.
"You still put your pants on one leg at a time, Steve" you giggled.
"That's oddly humbling" he smirked and you giggled again.
"My family wouldn't treat you any differently either. My brother would probably lose his mind if he knew I was hanging out with you for the day. Not because you're the Captain, but because you're a man" you rolled your eyes thinking about him.
"He would put me in my place would he?" he chuckled.
"In a heartbeat" you agreed quickly.
