she'll make her coffee. she'll pretend she's in love with the idea of being alive. she'll make a point not to stare at the knives sitting on the counter top by the stove.

all is well.

in this apartment that she doesn't pay for, with this furniture that's too modern for her maximalist tastes, with the constant sounds of parents laughing outside with their children surrounding her - but never beside her.

it's fine - is what she'll tell herself over her fourth cup of black coffee that she doesn't even like - this is how it's supposed to be, it's how its been written since you were born, this story has been told over and over again, you know how it's supposed to start.

she'll paw at the dangling red feather hanging from her neck, running her calloused fingertips across the soft feathers and smile when it responds with a gentle fluttering, moving to up to tickle at her face in protest, and she'll tell herself over and over again that this is how it's supposed to be.

in this desolate, empty, quiet apartment building, constantly tainted by the smell of tobacco and burning that her stress relievers give off, no matter how much she keeps the windows open - even at night when they cause her to bundle up in bed due to the cold breeze - the smell never dissipates.

its almost like its taunting her, the smell reminding her why she is here - why she's even still alive in the first place.

you do not have time to be a child.

so, yes - in this high rise apartment with cold tile floors and thin blankets, with the 'owner' in question sitting at the kitchen bench with two chairs beside her that will forever go unused, with the u.a course application papers laid out in front of her on the bland marble top - all is well.
