the engine was quiet as she drove, letting the girl beside her woe in her silence for a little longer.

the woman saw the kid trying to follow the signs and scenery that they passed by, probably trying to figure out where they were going, but she had made sure they were getting as far away from that place as they could.

they just needed to find some abandoned place nearby the train station, leave the truck and tuck the kid up in her arms, try and look loving and enter the first train that came.

"where are we going?" the girl squeaked out, looking particularly small in the passenger seat in her big winter coat.

"shut the fuck up - god, i should've killed you, why didn't i kill you?" the drive gritted through her teeth, almost shaking with anger at herself.

"how the fuck am i gonna go back now?"

they looked something akin to a child then - one who had knowingly done something wrong and was awaiting for their parents to find out.

she smacked her hand onto the steering wheel but immediately regretted the action somewhat when the kid recoiled back into her seat at the sound.

they sighed, tightening their grip on the steering wheel before speaking once again in a rough voice.

"we're going far away,"

out of the corner of her eye, she saw the kid computing the answer in her head as patters of rain started to form on the windshield.

"why?"

they tongued at their cheek in annoyance before facing the kid with the hardest glare they could muster.

"look - you either shut up and follow me or i leave you on the side of the road with one less finger than before,"

she felt guilty for relishing in the way the kid's eye widen and the way they laced their chubby fingers together.

"so," they continued, signalling to the drive behind before switching lanes and stopping near the edge of the motorway, the rain picking up and bashing against the windows, "what'll it be?"

the girl bit at her already chapped lips, avoiding eye contact with the woman before muttering something at them "h-how long will i have to follow you for?"

the driver huffed, looking back at the road ahead and biting at her cheek before replying quietly.

"not long," she lied, "just...forever,"

they tried to reassure themselves, saying that the kid was only five - the chances of her knowing the weight of that word is low.

she was so hung up on the chances that she almost missed the small, "okay," coming from the kid.

their shoulders dropped and she let out a smile, looking at the girl while trying to ignore the sickening guilt pooling in her stomach.

she started up the engine again, but not before asking the little girl a question.

"remember what i told you, yeah?"

the kid hummed, looking out of the window and trying to imagine being somewhere far away from here, with the people that she loved and loved her.

"being a child is not a sin,"
