the headlights cut through the darkness, casting eerie reflections on the wet asphalt. the air was thick with the smell of rain-soaked earth as beni walked silently, her small frame dwarfed by the oversized coat she wore

her hand was shoved into the woman's pocket for warmth, arm pulled up to reach her own and curl around it before shoving it into her coat.

they had abandoned the car about ten minutes ago in some random field, and beni didn't question it when she was told to follow the woman, her saying that they would walk the rest of the way to the train station, apparently.

suddenly, though, the five year old paused, the rain pattering against her coat hood.

the woman turned, annoyed, "what?"

beni just pointed to the middle of the road beside them.

she followed the girls finger to see a deer, lying motionless.

after a few moment, beni's hand was flung out of the woman's pocket and she was barked at to stay there.

the girl heard the sound of car beeps and tires screeching on the road.

she looked to see the woman, kneeling next to the deer, the rain drumming steadily.

from her place at the side of the road, on the soggy grass, beni could see the deer's eyes glistening.

watching as the woman ran her fingers gently along the deer's nose bridge, she felt the cold wind nipping at her nose and beni wrapped her arms around herself.

she couldn't hear her over the sound of the rain, but saw the woman's mouth move gently as the deer's breathing slowed.

beni's eyes followed the hefty sigh that left her mouth after a moment, before she picked up the limbless deer and laid it down on the other side of the road.

after waiting for a car to pass by, the woman made her way back over to beni, and without any fanfare, she grabbed the girls hand and shoved it back in her pocket, dragging her until the five year old walked beside her once again.

"what do i call you?"

the woman tightened her grip on the girls hand at the quiet question, almost inaudible over the rain.

"i'm not telling you my name,"

"...but you know mine-,"

"-i've told you, that's not your name anymore,"

the pair fell into silence for a second.

"okay, banette,"

"...what?"

"banette - the pokemon,"

the woman fished out her phone, searching it up.

beni could practically hear the sneer on her face.

"that? it looks scary as shit, kid,"

"exactly,"

'one of the villains targets has been discovered - its one of the students, kacchan! kacchan should avoid combat and acting alone if possible! do you understand, kacchan?!'

"engage. don't engage - i don't give a damn!"

beni rushed forward and grabbed the back of the blond boys black shirt, pulling him out of the way of the spikes protruding from the villains mouth.
