We decided to keep walking. I stretched out my arms so I could touch the walls. This way I could feel it when there would be a turn. I told Torin to grab onto my bag, so I also felt him slightly pulling my bag. I knew that if I stopped feeling that little pull, I should get worried. Luckily, he never let go. We eventually saw a faint light in the distance.
“Look! A light, let’s hurry!” I said. Before Torin could reply, I upped my pace. I heard Torin’s footsteps walk faster behind me as well. Soon enough, the light came closer and closer until I was covered in the dim, orange light. We left the hallway and looked around. The room we just entered was one of those typical rooms you always see in adventure movies: We were standing on a slab of rock with a bridge attached to it. The bridge led over a massive lava pool and ended on the other side. The other side had no exit. The bridge was one of those thin, fragile, stone ones. I gulped.
“Fuck.” I said. I walked a little closer to the edge and looked down at the lava. I quickly stepped back. Fear filled my body. I turned away from the lava.
“Are you okay, Ruby?” Torin asked. I shook my head.
“No. I’m terrified of heights.” I replied. I suddenly heard Faith’s scream. Torin heard it as well. I immediately turned back around and focused on the other side of the bridge. I saw a figure, sitting on the ground and rocking back and forth. The figure looked like a girl.
“Torin, there she is! She’s on the other side of the bridge!” I exclaimed. I started running towards the bridge, but my fear took over. I stopped right before the bridge.
“It’s okay Ruby. You can do this. I’m here with you.” Torin said. I took a few deep breaths. I faced forward and stepped onto the bridge. It made a cracking sound as soon as I stood on it. Fuck it’s going to break. I shook my head to remove the thoughts from my mind. I took another step. Torin stepped onto the bridge behind me. I crossed the bridge at a very slow pace. The bridge kept cracking with every step, but I managed to cross the bridge unharmed. I quickly stepped off the bridge and looked around to find Faith. I saw she moved and was sitting behind a pillar, still rocking. I ran towards her.
“Faith? Faith, are you alright?” I said. She looked up at me and stopped rocking. Her eyes were big and filled with fear. She looked around and back at me.
“They’re here. They can hear you.” Faith whispered. I turned to Torin.
“We have to get out of here, now.” Torin nodded and picked up Faith. Something fell off of her. I picked it up. It was a note. I opened it and saw Graves’ handwriting. I sighed and tucked it away in my pocket. I nodded at Torin and we quickly crossed the bridge, which started to fall apart behind me. We ran towards the passage. We just ran through the darkness, not caring if we bumped into walls. Soon, we noticed we left the passage. I was holding the torches we dropped at the lava pit. They suddenly lit up again. Faith was snuggled against Torin, shaking. We kept on running, hoping and praying that we would be on time. We ran and ran and I heard voices and screams everywhere. I heard footsteps behind me but I ignored it all. I just wanted to get out. I just wanted to get Faith to safety.
