"hey penny," jonah took the opportunity to stop her and her friends as they split away from the boys.
"hey.." she turned around to look at him, slightly furrowing.
"uh i wanted to.. do something for you.. i was just wondering when a good time.. would be..?"
"oh, like do you want just me.. or in front of everyone?" she questioned, speaking with a slight slur.
"i don't mind," he quickly replied.
"okay.. um well, we were just going to the bathroom, and then we were gonna do the cake.. did you want to do it before or after that?"
"maybe before the cake," aurora chimed in, having a odd feeling they may need something to help with any awkward tension after his plans.
"yeah, okay, that works," jonah agreed.
"okayy," penelope dragged the word out as she turned back around and continued heading in the directions of the bathrooms with her friend — the other already running off there in a hurry. "that was weird."
"you can say that again," aurora chuckled.
getting into the bathroom, the two both used the free toilet stalls before they gathered at the sinks, filling layla in on the interaction with the jock. their talking quickly turning into an outburst of laughter with all the possibilities they came up with.
"should we maybe head back out and see what he wants?" penelope suggested.
"yeah, let's do it," layla quickly hummed.
"i'm SO interested," aurora laughed as she followed the birthday girl out of the bathroom.
walking out to the main area, they noticed mainly everyone gather around where the little stage was. weaving their way through to the front where the rest of their friends were stood, looking slightly confused at jonah sat up there on one of the chairs and a guitar rested on his knee.
"here's the birthday girl.. happy early birthday," jonah smiled at her, then becoming rather awkward as he continued with; "i'm sure many of you know that i've.. embarrassed her in the past, but now it's my turn to embarrass.. myself.."
"or show off some hidden talent!" corbyn yelled out, following with a laugh since he had little faith in his friend.
"sorry in advance penny," daniel gently placed his hand on the girl's shoulder and chimed in with an apology, while the one of stage started strumming the guitar. "we did try to talk him out of this, or at least i did.."
"penny, i won't make assumptions about why you switched your homeroom but i think it's cause of me.." jonah sung the start of one of her favorite songs — switching out 'betty' for her name. "penny, one time i was riding on my skateboard when i passed your house, it was like i couldn't breath.."
jude who was stood beside the girl with his arms folded watching the jock, leant down to penelope's height, quietly chuckling out; "once again proving he didn't watch barbie.."
"mh"
the smile on jude's face abruptly fading away as he caught note of the one of her's. it in fact not from him and his comment, but from the one singing to her, whilst she silently sung along herself.
"but if i just showed up to your party. would you have me? would you want me? would you tell me to go fuck myself?" jonah slightly laughed through the line since was fitting to them in the moment. "or lead me to the garden? in the garden, would you trust me if i told you it was just a summer thing? i'm only 17, i don't know anything, but i know i miss you.."
"penny, i know where it all went wrong, your favorite song was playin' rom the far side of the gym. i was nowhere to be found, i hate the crowds, you know that. plus, i saw you dance with him... you heard the rumours from inez, you can't believe a word she says, most times, but this time it was true.. the worst thing that i ever did, is what i did to you.."
repeating the chorus, penelope's eyes stayed glued to him as they had been the whole time. while jude was, to best describe it, shocked, at the fact everyone was enjoying this performance of jonah trying to 'win back' his ex. and even from his little knowledge of the two's relationship, he was confused.
"i was walkin' home on broken cobblestones, just thinkin' of you when she pulled up like a figment of my worst intentions. she said 'james, get in, let's drive'. those days turned into nights slept next to her, but i dreamt of you all summer long.."
something about that line got to penelope, she quickly snapped out of her haze and looked around behind her to find ruby. her eyes landing on the girl, she simply shrugged as she didn't have a care for the current situation — after all she meant it when she said she didn't want him back.
"penny, i'm here on your doorstep, and i planned it out for weeks now, but it's finally sinkin' in. penny, right now is the last time i can dream about what happens when you see my face again," he continued to sing, his tone softening up slightly as she was now paying attention to him once again. "the only thing i wanna do is make it up to you.. so i showed up at your party.."
"yeah, i showed up at your party. will you have me? will you love me? will you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends? if you kiss me, will it be just like i dreamed it? will it patch your broken wings? i'm only 17, i don't know anythin', but i know i miss you.."
"standin' in your cardigan.. kissin' in my car again, stopped at a streetlight. you know i miss you," he concluded the song, soon standing up and slightly bowing whilst some sincerely cheered him one, and others as a teasing manner.
"so the cake!" aurora chimed in as the room felling into silence.
after everyone had sung the girl 'happy birthday' and she thanked them all for coming, the music resuming as everyone dispersed again. and since penelope had wandered off, jude grabbed a piece of cake himself and took a seat at one of the tables.
"you gonna go stop him from mackin' on ya girl?" jack teased, pointing over at his friend in the corner of the room with penelope.
"if that's what she wants then so be it," jude shrugged, somewhat visibly swallowing as he tried to not show that he cared. "she's her own person, she can make her own decision, that's not my job to do."
"'i've been to prison's not so tough now huh?" corbyn laughed, nicknaming the boy.
"it's called being respectful," he snarkily replied. "maybe you should try it instead of hoping to cause a fight or whatnot and ruin penny's party. so cut it. go be happy for your friend that he got the girl or whatever."
AUTHOR'S NOTE! i had to. this song is just so perfect for the plot and the whole double girlfriend situation (it was unintentional too btw i did not start this book with betty in mind)
