Lies are like a disease in our hearts, insidious and often undetected until they begin to spread and manifest in more damaging ways.
At first, a small lie may seem harmless, a minor deviation from the truth that we rationalize as necessary or inconsequential.
We become entangled in the fabrications we've constructed, and the lies others tell us start to influence our own narratives.
Eventually, we begin telling these lies to ourselves so frequently that they almost sound real.
Lydia leans against the cold, damp wall of her cell, her eyes clouded with distant memories. "I remember that look in his eye. Still see it. How cold it is," she mutters under her breath, a shiver running through her despite the warm night air. Henry sits opposite her, listening intently as she corrects herself, "Was." She scoffs, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Why am I even telling you this?"
Henry shrugs slightly, a sad smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Beats the quiet. Beats being alone."
"Never been alone," Lydia murmurs, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "My people traveled in groups with the dead. I miss the sounds... the smell..." Her voice trails off, lost in the memories of a life that seems so far away.
Outside the cell, Daryl and Leo had been sitting against one of windows, listening to the conversation between the two teenagers.
Henry's eyes narrow as he confesses, "Not gonna lie... Walking around in dead people's skins is pretty messed up."
Lydia scoffs, shaking her head in disbelief. "Thinking this place isn't gonna fall like every other place... that's messed up."
Henry tilts his head, a challenging glint in his eye. "Agree to disagree."
A sly grin spreads across Lydia's face as she probes, "Your dad's an asshole like mine. The other guy is an asshole too." Leo scoffed at the young girl's words. "All you did was sneak out. Is it even that hard? Are there a lot of guards posted here?"' Her words are casual, but there's a calculating edge to her tone, a predator sizing up its prey.
"Daryl's not my dad," Henry scoffs, his voice tinged with bitterness. "And to tell you the truth, I prefer Leo over Athena every day."
Lydia looked at him in confusion "Athena?"
"She is the real leader here, she's Daryl's daughter and Leo's wife... but damn she's really scary, you don't want to mess with her." Henry told her "I remember one time, my mom told me how when she first met Athena, when she was only sixteen... she envied her."
"Why?" Lydia asked him.
"Because Athena is not afraid of anything or anyone. She can look the Devil in the eyes and will tell him 'Go fuck yourself'. She is... just that kind of a person." Henry explained to her "And anyway Daryl doesn't even want to be here, even though his family is. He's only doing it as a favor for my mom." He glances over at Lydia, who sits in the cell across from his, her eyes gleaming with interest.
