Later, Athena walked into a room, finding Lou...
"Hey. Heard you were back." She says.
"I missed you, too."
"Also heard you caught yourself a real head-scratcher." She said.
"Mm."
"Buried-alive guy." She muttered.
"Yeah, Bobby, tell you about that?"
"No. Ashleigh Gilbert. She finally spoke to me. Heard you two really got into it at the hospital. You posted a uni to keep her out?" She asked.
"I couldn't help myself. I'm trying to protect the woman."
Back at Buck and Ashleigh's apartment...
"I'm just trying to figure out how Edgar Hill ended up buried alive... and why he won't tell anyone what happened." Ashleigh says.
"Uh, isn't that the police's job?" Buck asked.
"I don't think they have any idea what they're looking for." Said Ashleigh.
Ashleigh lifted her cup, taking a swig of her coffee, and Lou placed his cup down...
"Edgar Hill. Carjacked, shot, and buried alive. Claims to have no memory of what happened and no idea of who might want to hurt him." Lou says.
"Married?" Asked Athena.
"Yeah. Lizzie. Married for ten years. Current whereabouts are unknown. He said she was on a cruise to Alaska." Lou tells her."Let me guess. He lied?" Athena asked.
"I'm sorry, Lizzie." Ashleigh muttered, putting a post-it note on the window. "That's what he said when we pulled him out of the hole."
Buck just shook his head.
"Were you able to track down the coffin?" Athena asked.
"Was able to trace it to the store, but that was it. They couldn't tell me who bought those specific boards. Just gave me a list of everyone who made a purchase." Lou muttered.
"It's gonna take some time to run down all these." Athena said.
"I did, uh, learn something interesting, though. I followed Lou to the store, and the manager told me they all knew Edgar Hill. Apparently, he shopped there. But he was a contractor, so that's not surprising. He'd been in a lot the last couple of weeks, but, oddly, the manager couldn't find any purchase records." Ashleigh says.
"Wait, the manager told you all this?" Asked Buck.
"With a little help." Ashleigh mumbled, shrugging her shoulders.
"So he's coming into the store but not buying anything?" Athena asked.
"You think he's visiting a friend? The wife didn't have any friends. At least according to the neighbours. But then, past few weeks, they started noticing a van parked down the street. And one of them saw Lizzie getting out of it." Ashleigh tells Buck.
"Could've been anyone's van. Could've been the pool guy." Buck murmured.
"Okay, never had a pool, but I'm pretty sure you don't meet with them inside their van, Buck." Said Ashleigh.
"You think she was having an affair." Buck says.
"I think there was definitely something wrong with that marriage. Maybe money troubles." Ashleigh muttered.
"He was having financial troubles." Said Lou.
"And still managed to find a way to pay for three life insurance policies for the wife." Athena said.
"The neighbours said they didn't have kids. She didn't work outside the home." Ashleigh says.
"And he let the policy on himself lapse." Lou muttered.
"Lizzie was furious when she found out. The mail courier said they had a screaming match in the driveway." Ashleigh murmured.
"Over life insurance?" Asked Buck.
"He told her she'd never get another penny out of him, dead or alive. She told him, money or not, she'd rather see him dead." Ashleigh muttered, turning around and facing Buck.
"Still, one thing just doesn't make sense. The Hills had two cars. A seven-year-old sedan and a brand-new Range Rover." Lou says.
"Fancy car like that would make Edgar a target." Athena said.
"Except he claims that he was driving the sedan when he got carjacked. But according to Ashleigh, he had the keys to the SUV. They fell out of his pocket when they pulled him from the box." Lou said.
"Did you check the garage at their house?" Athena asked.
"Empty. Both cars are gone. I tried to ask Edgar about it, but he stopped talking." Lou tells her.
"Suppose the wife could have it." Said Athena.
"Or maybe he gave it to a friend." Lou muttered, crossing his arm over his chest.
"Someone who works at a home improvement store?" Athena asked.
"Okay, I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out. The marriage is in trouble. Lizzie wants out until she discovers the money is gone." Said Ashleigh.
"Edgar's business is failing. He's about to lose everything he has." Said Lou.
"She's invested years into that marriage. She is not about to walk away with nothing or, at worst, half of nothing." Ashleigh says.
"But Edgar still has those life insurance policies, and they're worth millions. Just not as good as Lizzie's alive." Lou says.
"The house, the cars, the retirement accounts... they're worth millions. But only if Edgar is dead." Ashleigh said.
"You think it was a professional hit?"
