What I Want
Stephanie's POV
Its nearly 1am and he still isn't here yet! How in the hell is this ever going to work? I think as I pace across the floor of my bedroom. Drawing in a long breathe I drop onto the bed with my head in my hands.
Eventually I give in and lay down, slowly drifting off into sleep.
********************
"Honey."
I shift my body weight turning from one side to the other and I can feel Robert's body pressed up against mine.
"We need to talk." I say, my voice froggy from sleep.
"About what?" He says pressing his lips to my cheek, trailing all the way down to my neck.
"I can't talk if your all over me."
"I'm sure whatever it is it can wait." Robert says in between kisses.
I sigh, endulging in the pleasure. When I realize I practically promised Laurel I would tell him, tonight.
"Stop." I whisper.
"Just relax." He says softly into my ear.
I sigh in frustration.
"No. I will not relax!" I say, pushing him away and getting up from the bed.
He looks at me, his face full of surprise.
"What's the matter with you?"
"I said we need to talk and the only thing your interested in is coming on to me!" I shout.
"I'm not coming on to you. You're my wife. I was trying to make love to you." Robert says, his eyebrows pulling together like they do when he gets irritated.
"That's what got us into this predicament in the first place!" I say, throwing my hands up in the air.
"What are you talking about?" He says, throwing himself back on the bed, rubbing his temples with his hands.
I take a deep breath and spit it out:
"Robert I'm pregnant."
His eye were closed before when he stayed back on the bed. Now they're wide open staring at me.
"Really?" He asks.
"Yes really!" I shout, "Why would I joke about something like this!"
He pauses and his whole demeaner changes. He's now sitting on the edge of the bed and his face is lit up like a candle.
"Thats amazing!" He smiles, grabbing my hands.
"No its not!" I snap, snatching my hands from his, "What on God's green earth would make you think we are ready to have a baby?"
"I don't understand what you mean." He says.
"Robert, wake up! You're never home! I can count literally on one hand how many times you've seen Laurel since she's been here. I spend more time with her than you do! Which isn't a problem for me because we get along quite well, but looking at that and thinking I can bring a baby into this world is incredibly stupid! I am not going to take care of a baby by myself!" I huff.
"Well what do you want me to do? You certainly wouldnt have this kind of lifestyle on your principal's salary alone." Robert says, raising his voice.
"It has never been about the money and you know that." I say through my teeth, turning to escape to the bathroom.
"Now wait a minute. I didn't mean it like that and you kn-" Robert says, grabbing my arm.
"Let me go." I growl.
"No. I'm serious. We're going to talk about this. You started this conversation now finish it." He says pulling me into him.
"I don't want to talk to you! You know now! That was the agenda. I'm not about to argue with you."
I push away from him and walk to the dresser with my mirror on it. I take out my earrings I fell asleep in waiting for him.
"No, tell me, what do you want me to do, honestly." Robert asks, standing up and taking off his tie.
I ignore him and proceed to dissemble myself. I take a wet cloth from its pack and start to wipe off my make-up.
"We are having a conversation you know. That consist of me talking and you talking back." Robert says, kicking off his shoes.
"What do you want me to say Robert?" I sigh, balling up the used towelletes with make-up on them.
"I want you to answer the question dammit!" He yells.
"Keep your voice down. And stop cursing at me." I say, brushing my hair into a sloppy unfinished ponytail.
"Answer the question." He says, slightly quieter.
"Do you really want to know what I want?" I ask, slipping off my clothes from the day before, leaving me in my underwear.
"Yes Stephanie. Why else would I ask." Robert says, pulling on a pair of pajama pants, his chest bare.
"Do be a smart ass." I grouch, looking at him behind me in the mirror.
"Stephanie answer the question."
"I want you to cut back on you practice." I answer, turning around to face him still in my underwear.
His eyes roam over my body.
"My eyes are up here!" I snap, pulling my robe off the rocking chair next to the dresser and putting it on.
He comes out of his daze and back to the conversation.
"I can't do that right now. I'm on my way to being Dean of Medicine at the hospital." He says, rubbing lotion into his elbows.
"Since when is your job more important than your unborn child?" I demand.
"Since I knew about the job first." He answers quickly.
My eyes widen and my mouth falls open.
"I didnt mean it like that." Robert says , rushing towards me with his hands out.
"Stop." I say, holding my hands up.
"Stephanie-"
"No." I say, shaking my head, "Like I said this family isn't ready for a baby. I'll handle it."
"What the hell do you mean you'll handle it?"
"Exactly what I said." I say, throwing away the make-up cloths in the small trash can next to my nightstand.
"No you will not." Robert growls, stalking towards me.
I lay on the bed fix my pillows.
"Leave me alone Robert."
"Hell no! There is no leave me alone! We're not finished talking."
"Yes there is a 'leave me alone'. I'm done talking to you. You are not the man I married. I don't know where he is but when you find him let me know. Until then get out." I say laying down pulling the comforter on top of me.
"And go where?" He asks, appalled.
"The guest bedroom, the couch, I honestly don't care. Anywhere but here. And turn off the light when you leave."
I turn on my side and close my eyes.
"This isn't over." I hear Robert say, his footsteps getting farther away until the color in my eyelids go dark, telling me he turned off the light.
