Blood Transfusions
Steph's POV
When get the news that tells you that there is absolutely nothing else they can do for your child is the moment your heart breaks...when some small part of you dies. It's the moment you vow to never love another child like you loved your own...but it's awfully hard when life throws in your face the girl that you hoped your little girl would have lived to be.
Pulling up to Sacred Heart Hospital, my heart is slamming against my chest. I run from my car to the ER section of the hospital and up to the check-in desk.
"I need to see Laurel Eaton." I say to the nurse behind the counter.
"Who are you to her?" she asks me.
"I'm her mother." I explain impatiently.
"Right this way." She says, walking from behind the counter.
She leads me down a hall of rooms separated by curtains, and I pray that Laurel's not in one of these. Then we come to a hall where there are actually doors and walls to indicate different rooms and I sigh in relief. She opens a door and Laurel is lying on the hospital bed with an IV in her arm, looking more fragile than I've ever seen her before.
"Oh honey." I whisper to her, walking up to bed.
I sit on the edge of the bed and take her hands into mine.
"What happened?" I ask her.
She takes a deep breath, and winces almost like it had hurt her to do so.
"I got hit by car." She says and shrugs.
I laugh tensely.
"I know that. I meant how."
"I honestly don't know. When we were jogging we came to a 4-way. I look for cars but there was only one and it was so far away. Then as I was running across the street it hit me."
I look sadly into her eyes, and gently brush a stray piece of hair from her face.
"Okay." I nod.
"Where's dad?"
"Somewhere around this place. I don't think anyone has told him yet. He tends to stay away from the ER." I say.
"This is the hospital he works at?" Laurel asks.
"This is it." I sigh.
Unexpectedly, I yawn and I bring my hand to my mouth to cover it.
"You should lay down." Laurel tells me.
"There you go worrying about me, and you're the one in the hospital bed." I laugh.
She shrugs again and I bend down to kiss her forehead.
"I'm going to go find your father and your doctor."
I squeeze her hands softly before letting go. I get up from the bed and walk out of the room to call Robert.
The phone doesn't even have a chance to ring before I hear his voice on the other side.
"I just heard. I'm on my way."

Laurel's POV
My head's still spinning when Steph walks out of the room. And it's still spinning when Melony comes out of the adjoined bathroom in the hospital room.
