It's Not Mine

Laurel's POV

Back at school, I dash into Mr.Lancaster's class right before the tardy bell rings.

"Nice of you to join us Ms.Eaton." Mr.Lancaster says as I take my seat.

I smile sheepishly and pull my tablet from my bookbag.

"Okay class. Pull up whatever app you use to take notes and prepare to type."

The class groans.

"Yes, my young pupils!! Its about that time!!! Its essay week!! Today however you will be taking notes on how to properly write a college essay."

I tap the Google Docs app on my tablets home screen and title my new document College Essay Prep. Then a message symbol appears in my notification bar at the top of the screen.

NEW MESSAGE FROM SARAH WEBER

I look over my shoulder at Sarah and she nods and smiles so I turn back around and open the message.

How's ur mom? It reads.

She's fine. Just a stomach virus. I type.

I know I'm lying and I feel the guilt slowly making its way to center stage in my mind. Sarah's the best friend I've made here so far. I don't want to lie to her, but I have no other choice.

OK :), she replies.

I don't message her back and I try to focus on Mr.Lancaster's lecture.

"What are you working on?" Mrs.Fletcher, my art design teacher asks me.

"Nothing special." I shout over the humming of all the sewing machine, "Just a dress I envisioned yesterday."

"Very neat. I can't wait to see the ending product." Mrs.Fletcher smiles.

"You and me both." I say, straightening out the black fishnet fabric laid on my lap.

"Let's wrap it up. The bell is about to ring in a few."

"Okay." I nod, as I begin to roll up a spool of silk gold fabric.

Mrs.Fletcher walks away and I remove my dress from under the sewing machine needle.

"Your dress is great." Sarah compliments.

She's standing in front of my work station drumming her nails on the table.

"Thanks." I smile.

The bell rings and I fold up my unfinished dress, and tuck it under my arm.

"Let's go." I sigh, grabbing my bookbag.

Down the hall we're walking side-by-side when we get to my locker. I unlock it and gently set my dress in it.

"So Laurel..." Sarah starts

"Yes?" I say, closing my locker.

"Do you want to hang out this weekend?" Sarah asks.

"Sure." I answer happily, "I'll check with my parents but I'm pretty sure I can."

"Okay." Sarah smiles, "I'll see you tomorrow."

"Okay."

Sarah walks away and out the double doors at the end of the hall. I turn and go in the opposite direction. When I make it outside only a few cars are left in the administrator's lot where I parked the car. I get in and speed off back to Walgreen's.
