"You ever been in one of those impossible scenarios? The type of impossible scenario where you think you have two amazing choices only to realise neither choice is an option because no matter how you look at it the end result is always the same?" Austin asks Grassy as they lounge out on floaties in their pool, beer in each hand. "Like, you get one wish so you decide to wish your dying cat's illness away, but there is a catch - your dog has to die for the wish to take effect?" Grassy asks.
"Yes."
"Or where you have the power to end world hunger or stop all wars, but you can't do both?"
"Yes...ultimately there is no choice at all and even if you don't make a choice - it's still a choice and still not the outcome you so desperately want."
"You have to change the perspective, not the scenario to change the choice."
Austin frowns and sits up, looking over at Grassy. "What do you mean? Change the perspective?" he asks. "Well... let's take the dying cat and dog scenario. Why is it your choice? Maybe the dog wants to die to save the cat or maybe the cat is tired and ready to go. It's hard because you are only thinking about what you want. You want them both. You can't have them both so you have to change the perspective. What do they want?"
"What about war and world hunger?"
"Easy. Don't focus on war or world hunger. Focus on teaching people to love each other. Teach them kindness and the importance of sharing. Soon we will have a world of happy people so there will be no war and no world hunger. Change the perspective not the scenario."
"That's not how the game works," Austin huffs. He is annoyed, only because he has an impossible scenario of his own and he does not know how to change the perspective. He has no viable solution. "I have an impossible scenario for you," Grassy says sitting up excitedly and falling off his floaty. Austin looks at his watch while he waits for Grassy to stop dramatically drowning, he has to meet Levi in an hour. They have a meeting with Dre and Satan to show them the five songs they have completed this week. He loves every single one. Each one is better than the last. He had spent every day this week with Levi from early in the morning till late at night.
She is amazing. Austin has never been so taken with someone. She is smart, funny, sweet and very kind. He thinks if she could speak her voice would be soft with a soothing rasp. She is very shy and tends to stick to Austin, often hiding behind him if someone new pops into the studio, only coming out once she has surety from Austin that they are cool. She has taken a liking to Dre who is always nice to her and has also learnt some sign language to communicate with her. That made Levi smile brightly - she felt included. Must be shit trying to live in a world that's not designed to accommodate you. She has also struck up a friendship with Grassy who swears she can not only read lips but minds too.
It feels like she has always just been in his life and he can't even fathom how he spent his days before Levi. Every morning they huddle together on the couch and sign a bunch of crap about their lives before they even consider working on any music. Once they get rolling on a new song they get lost, tucked away in a little bubble, just the two of them as they share experiences in their lives that they both connect to - first kisses, broken hearts, stolen kisses and lost love. That tingling feeling when you experience something great or that time you laughed so hard you almost wet yourself. They pour all that onto the pages of the songbooks they thumb through and swap at the end of their sessions to take home and peep at when they should be resting. They text each other then too, at midnight or 2 am with a sudden lyric change or a new line or even a change in melody to a song.
They have the same sense of humour, they like their coffee made the same way and they always end up fighting for the last French fry in the box of extra French fries they order for their lunch - she always gets it because Austin is a sucker for her pout. They like the same things and have the same passions. Their dreams are similar, and so is their outlook on life. They click and fall into an easy friendship where they have each other to lean on, encourage, and build up. Their differences are a positive part of their relationship too. Where she is careful and thinks twice about everything, Austin is impulsive and has a gung-ho approach. Where she is shy and reserved, he is loud and outgoing. Where she is calm, he is chaos. They fit together like two mismatched puzzle pieces.
