It's been three days since he got rid of Cassidy. The house has been quiet without her constant screeching and Austin can't understand why he kept her around for so long. He can't understand why he even entered into a relationship with her. She is not his type and would never normally have dated a woman like Cassidy.
How far has he fallen in life?
Add one more failed attempt at life to his already long list of things. Anyway, the house was too quiet and when a friend, whose name he doesn't know, phoned to say there was a party he took the opportunity to get out of the house and away from his fucking thoughts. Being alone with his thoughts is never a good idea because they always lead to Levi. The reality of what he has put that woman through makes him feel sick. He does not mean to hurt or make her worry. He loves her. He loves her more than he has ever loved anyone in his life and he has people like his father, his mother, and Grassy in his life to love so that says a lot about what Levi means to him.
No. Wait. He hates his mother. OK, hate is a strong word. He doesn't hate her he just hates what she did.
He loves them all - but nowhere near the magnitude that he loves Levi.
So, why?
Why can he put down the whisky?
Why can't he throw that silver hip flask away?
Why?
His thoughts hammer at his head and he gets lost in there with those voices while he floods his body with whisky in an attempt to drown everything out. But, it never stops and all it serves to do is find him somehow in front of Levi's house in the middle of the night, staring at what he thinks is her bedroom window. He does not know how he got here.
"They are sleeping. Let's just go home, buddy," Grassy whispers from a bush. "I just want to say sorry," Austin says as he tries to bend without falling over as he picks up a stone. He needs to apologize to Levi, she deserves an apology for him being such a piece of shit.
"Uh...how are you planning on doing that, buddy? Plan on beating her to death with that brick?"
Austin frowns and looks at his hand. He had picked up a brick instead of a stone. That was an accident but he does not trust his body to bend down again. He is very, very drunk. The porch light flicks on suddenly and the front door is yanked open by an annoyed-looking Stella. "Just because Levi is deaf does not mean I am. Have either of you any shame at showing up here, loudly, in the middle of the night? Why do you have a brick in your hand?" she asks. "I need to apologize to Levi and am going to wake her gently by throwing stones at her window like they do in those romantic movies. It's a romantic gesture," Austin says while still clutching the brick. "It's an idiotic gesture if you don't mind me saying," Grassy says with a shrug. "I mind," Austin confirms.
Stella frowns and looks at the open front door then back at Austin. "Why don't you just go through the wide open front door and shake her awake?" she asks. "I can't do that. If she wakes up with my face in her face it will startle her. It's better this way," he says lifting the brick. "Oh...ok...go ahead then," Stella says gesturing for him to throw the brick. He aims as best he can and then throws the brick. It shatters the entire window as it goes through and makes a lot of noise. Grassy, Stella, and Austin stare at the still-darkened room - Levi doesn't respond at all.
"She must be deaf, no to have heard all that noise," Grassy says. "True. But, then again that's not her room window. It's mine. Levi is across on the other side of the house," Stella says with a sigh. "It would have been helpful if you had told me that before I threw that stone," Austin hisses then stables and grabs onto a tree trunk to steady himself.
"Brick," Stella and Grassy say together.
"You are so drunk I am surprised you can see straight, Austin, let alone were able to hit the window," Stella says.
