"What is this place?" Austin asks dropping his suit jacket accidently from his hands onto the dusty road below. "This is the beginning, buddy," Grassy says patting his shoulder as he walks past, "come on, keep up!" he shouts over his shoulder as he bounces up the long dusty country road. Austin sighs and grabs his coat then walks up the long road behind Grassy. Why the fuck did Grassy insist they abandon the car at the end of this road. It's fucking hot, there are endless fields of brown dry sand on either side of them and by the time they get to the top of the long country road Austin is wet with sweat and covered in dust. "Welcome to the next chapter of your life. Let us hope it's not as fucked up as the first chapter, huh?" Grassy says nudging Austin with his elbow then stretching out his arms in front of him to an old-looking farmhouse.
Austin stares at it. It's on its last leg and could do with a coat of paint. He is about to turn around and walk back down the country road but the front door opens and a woman steps out. She looks confused at first then her face breaks out in a wide smile and she dashes down the porch steps, throwing her arms around Grassy and hugs him tight as he swings her around. "Austin, this is Laura Cusin, she is a close friend," Grassy signs to Austin when he puts Laura down. She is deaf? "Hi," Austin signs. She grins at him and greets him back. "So...is this your deaf lawyer cousin?" he asks. Grassy frowns at him then his brows shoot up as he starts laughing. "I am so stupid sometimes! Laura Cusin, lawyer Cousin! I crack myself up...pretty much the same thing though, you have to admit," Grassy says. "No, Grassy. Just because they rhyme does not mean they are the same," Austin says, his anger growing way too quickly for what they are fighting about. "Well let's just agree to disagree," Grassy says with a chuckle.
"No!" Austin shouts, "I am so tired of your bullshit! Why can't you just be normal?! Why can't you just speak like a normal person?! You go on and on in riddles and say shit no one understands! Why the fuck are we here in the middle of nowhere?! You say you are always trying to fucking help, but you just make things worse! Give me my flask!" he shouts thrusting his hand out for his flask. He fucking wants it. Grassy knocks his hand away, grabs Austin's shirt and yanks him down, shoving his face into Austin's. "If you want that flask you will have to fight me for it," Grassy says through gritted teeth. Austin has never seen him this angry before. "Go on. Hit me. Punch me in my face. Fuck me up until I beg you to stop and pass you that flask, "Grassy growls, egging him on.
Austin could never. He could never hurt Grassy like that. "Let go of me," Austin whispers as all his anger drains out and is replaced with shame. Grassy lets go of him and Austin takes a step back. "Just...Just leave me alone," he whispers then turns and walks off into a field of dry dust-brown soil. Where the fuck are they? His hands are shaking more than they ever have and all he wants is a drink. His head is screaming at him too. He can't do this.
He sits in the field, his body shaking. He is freezing but the sun is hot. He is also starting to feel sick and he is sweating. He feels hung over and his mind is playing tricks on him because all he can smell is whisky. He sits alone all day, then when night falls he curls up in a cold shivering mass of sweat. This is the longest he has gone without any form of booze. He would go get some but he is in the middle of fucking nowhere and has no idea where to go to get to a town, Grassy also threw the car keys in the creek near the road so he has no facing way of getting anywhere. He can't sleep either and he swears when he looks at the moon he sees shadows that form Levi's face. He hates himself for what he did to her. The voices in his head push her down but for the first time, he questions them.
This was her choice.
Was this her choice? No, it wasn't.
She wanted you to be like Colter.
Did she though? She never said.
She left you when you needed her most.
Where was I when she needed me most?
