**Mincho’s POV**
It's been six months since Gaster last played mad scientist with our souls, thanks in part to Asgore’s delightful imperial decree that forced all sorts of soul trait shenanigans on his poor army. Isn’t it nice when government mandates meddle in your very essence? And just when you thought the chaos couldn’t get more absurd, we discovered Asgore’s grand plans for monsters and humans alike. Spoiler alert: they weren’t great.
Turns out, thanks to Gaster’s last little science fair project, we’ve got shiny new soul traits, and let’s just say they weren’t exactly a mood booster. The soul trait of a monster is practically the center of their very way of life—it's what makes them, well, them. Luckily, we still look and act like ourselves (what a relief), but our views on Gaster? Let’s just say the bar has dropped to subterranean levels of disdain. Who knew we could circle deeper into hatred like it was an Olympic sport?
Sans now has a soul trait of dedication, and Papyrus boasts leadership—great for battle, I guess! Meanwhile, I’m still the resident disappointment in Gaster’s eyes with my new soul trait: care. Yep, he thinks its just as useless as my last one. And despite my ability to thoroughly wish someone into the afterlife with my bone tessen, apparently not outright killing them is still a problem? It’s a mystery, really.
On the bright side, I did score three nifty new items two of them are for nursing my brothers back to health: a shinobi flute and a bone koto. The shinobue is a real gem—I can patch them up on the run during battles. And the bone koto? Perfect for when stealth is key, allowing us to rest (and maybe play a little music) while my brothers recover.
We decided to keep all this a secret from our favorite punchable face, Gaster. So he thinks I only got the same bone attack upgrade like my brothers got named blasters as part of our new soul traits attack, plus a hefty power boost. The blasters look a bit quirky, shaped like dragon skulls, and make the cutest little noises when they fire. So, we told Gaster I got the same flashy gear, and without skipping a beat, he bought it hook, line, and sinker—genuinely thrilled about our newfound prowess. He was so overjoyed that he even sent a text to the emperor to show off his ‘success.’ All this excitement in Gaster's lab, miles away from the Capital, and thankfully, we were finally off the mission treadmill since Gaster's little soul experiment. Thank goodness for small mercies!
We were done with battles—thanks to Asgore deciding to fold his war cards, with his Empire coming down with a case of complications. After we snagged the monsters' territory back from the humans in a glorious showdown, Asgore made the wise move of hitting pause on the violence, and the humans played ball, too. They were tired of the whole ‘let's go to war’ gig, so they seized the ceasefire opportunity like it was a last slice of pizza. Meanwhile, Asgore had Gaster tinkering away on some top-secret gizmo for Monsterkind. So, Asgore’s grand plan of claiming human land by force got shelved, and my brothers and I were kept under lock and key in the lab, as one do with dangerous weapons.
Then came Asgore’s charming invitation for Gaster to join him for tea—just a casual chat, plus a chance for Gaster to flaunt his latest experiments on us. But Gaster, ever the workaholic, politely declined, claiming he was too engrossed in core mechanics and didn’t feel like making the trek to the capital for a show-and-tell just yet. Asgore, the sadistic prick, seemed to understand but decided to postpone the tea party for now.
Gaster was hard at work on a high-tech contraption meant to shower magical electricity across Asgore's lands, ensuring the air and soil were brimming with magic goodness that would grow bountiful fields of magical snacks for monsters. Plus, it was designed to help sick or injured monsters start feeling fabulous again.
Now, I know what some monsters might be thinking: "Maybe Asgore's had a change of heart!" Oh, bless their naive little hearts. Asgore's just trying to keep his subjects from plotting his overthrow. He’s aware that many are miffed about his war with the humans and his overzealous desire to keep the fighting going. But the truth is, they don’t want to tussle anymore—especially after he manipulated their soul traits. They’d rather rise against him than let it slide. So, naturally, Asgore whipped up a diabolical scheme to keep them at odds with the humans.
The core Gaster is building? It's supposed to brighten the lives of monsters, but if anything goes wrong with it, watch out! Asgore’s plan involves giving his subjects a taste of something precious and then yanking it away. Later, he’ll play the blame game and falsely accuse the humans. All this so he can reignite the war—and oh yes, seize that sweet human land.
When Sans caught wind of this maneuver on their phone call, his face twisted in disgust. He glanced at me and Papyrus, then started the mental chatter.
(Those assholes! How can they be so fuckin’ evil? but ya'know what? His scheme might actually work. A lot of monsters will be too hurt n angry ta question him. They’ll probably wanna lash out n fight whoever they think that did it.)
His words hit me like a ton of bricks but rattled Papyrus so much that his bones started to clatter. I wrapped him in a hug, and Sans joined in for an all-group squeeze. I gently rubbed Papyrus's skull and broke into a song, with Sans harmonizing like a pro.
"I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said I'll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be all right, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound
Don't you dare look out your window, darling, everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be all right, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound
Just close your eyes
You'll be all right
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound"
As our tune reached its finale, we latched onto each other like koalas, holding on tight for the remainder of the day.
