**Sans' Perspective**
The following morning found us nestled back in our familiar cage within the laboratory, our faces swathed in bandages—a stark reminder of the trials we endured just a day prior. Gaster was absent, preoccupied with a conversation with Emperor Asshole regarding his latest scheme to enhance the strength of his soldiers. (Ah, those poor wretches.)
“Hey, Sans, how bout I snag a cool code name?” Mincho inquired, his head resting on my lap as he gazed at his clawed hand, lost in thought.
(It's hard to believe we once had such smooth, tender features long ago. But thanks to the LV accumulated from Gaster’s relentless experiments and the ravages of war, we are transformed. Now, we bear the marks of fearsome fangs, slanted eyes, and hands and feet that end in claws. With the fresh scars from our recent escapades involving Gaster’s twisted ideas, it’s undeniable that we are becoming ever more terrifying and dangerous.)
I have a feeling he wants to dive into something light-hearted to help us shake off the heavy stuff we just endured. Honestly, I believe we could really use a solid distraction after the shit show that Gaster threw our way.
"Sure, I don't see why ya can't," I laughed softly, giving his head a gentle pat while avoiding his injuries.
"Why not call me Hōseki fer our future escapades?"
"Why Hōseki?" I inquired, intrigued.
"Durin’ one of those chaotic battlefield escapades, I stumbled upon a book that was surprisingly enlightening—who knew? It was all bout the various interpretations of a card game called bridge. Apparently, the diamond suit symbolizes the autumn season. S’like the suit is givin’ ya a subtle nudge bout how yer career is blossomin’. A diamond card is a little cheerleader fer progress, ethics, stability, commitment, n even the element of air. N ay, Jewels? jus' a fancy way ta say ‘diamond,’ if ya ask me. In japanese, jewels are known as hōseki—classy, right?'
"Alright, fair 'nuff. If yer’re claimin’ a cool codename, i want in on that too. Hmm, are there any other cards that would suit me?"
"NYAH HAH HAH, oh Sans, that was awful!" Papyrus guffawed, his laughter contagious, and Mincho, now known as Hōseki, joined in the fun.
“Ha ha ha! i reckon the spades are jus' what ya need, my pal, since they’re the top dogs in games that rank card suits. Spades are like the winter of card suits, representin’ the water element. They also symbolize the peak of wisdom, transformation, n acceptance that comes with old age. N let’s be real, 'supēdo' would be an absolutely rad code name fer you—it means spade in japanese!”
“OH OH, ME NEXT! I WANT A CODE NAME TOO!!!” Papyrus interjected eagerly.
“Fear not, little bro! I've got jus' the card fer you—it's the club suit, but let's jazz it up with its fancy name, Clover. Henceforth, ya shall be known as Kurōbā! clubs are the life of the summer party n represent the earth element. When it comes ta cards, the club suit embodies the wild n carefree days of youth, the time when books are fer mischief, readin’, n recklessness is practically a curriculum,” Mincho replied playfully to Papyrus.
“Water? I'm not reckless !” Papyrus pouted cutely, his cheeks puffed.
“Sorry, little bro, but I have'ta agree with hōseki on this one. Remember that time I warned ya ain’t ta venture into that menacin’ dark hole on the front line because it was perilous, yet ya dashed right in anyway? That’s the essence of recklessness,” I said and Papyrus’s face flushed a warm amber hue.
“Alright, I’ll accept the name on one condition: Mincho has to perform for us.”
“Oh, ya sly little fox! alright, I’ll belt out a tune. Got any favorites in mind??” Mincho inquired with a grin.
“You know my favorite, Hōseki,” Papyrus chimed, prompting Mincho to raise his arms in mock surrender as he smiled.
“Fine, fine…” I settled in comfortably beside Papyrus as Mincho began to sing.
"Isn't truth supposed to set you free?
Well, why do I feel so weighed down by it?
If I could show them everything I've seen
Open their eyes to all the lies then
Would they change their minds like I did?
But when I speak, they tell me, "Sit down"
But how can I when I've already started runnin'?
Oh, this is where we've been
But it's not where we belong
And I may be young, but I know I'm not wrong
So I look up at the stars to guide me
And throw caution to every warning sign
If knowing what it could be is what drives me
Then let me be the first to stand in line
So I make this wish
To have something more for us than this
So I make this wish
To have something more for us than this
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah
More than this, oh-ah-ah-ah
I never knew I needed room to grow
Yeah, I did what I was told when someone told me "no"
Now I've got all of this freedom in my bones
But I've still got the lid on, so it doesn't overflow
'Cause I've got reservations and hesitations
On where I should even begin
I'm past dipping my toes in
But I'm not, no, I'm not past diving in
If I could just be pointed in any given direction
On where to go and what to do
My legs are shaking, but my head's held high
The way you always taught me to
So I look up at the stars to guide me
And throw caution to every warning sign
I'm sure there will be challenges that find me
But I can take them on one at a time
So I make this wish
To have something more for us than this
So I make this wish
To have something more for us than this
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah (so I make this wish)
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah (to have something more)
More than this, oh, ah-ah-ah
So I make this wish
To have something more for us than this" After Mincho finishes his song papyrus asks us both a question.
After the song
“Hey, brothers! With our new codenames, shouldn’t we have a team name too?” Papyrus pondered aloud.
“Mmmmm, you’re right, papyrus... but seein’ as i’m a bit lazy… mincho can name the team as well,” I replied with a mischievous smirk, earning me a look of betrayal from Mincho.
“Hey, will guess what? i've cooked up our codenames! now it's yer turn ta conjure up a team name, lazy bones!,” Mincho retorted, burying his face in my lap. I couldn’t help but chuckle at my twin’s amusing attempts to mirror my laid-back attitude.
“Ooooh, how bout... Kashikoi kitsune? which translates ta clever foxes, so from now on, we’ll proudly be the clever foxes.”
If only Papyrus’s eye lights weren’t bandaged, I could just imagine them sparkling with joy.
Bounding up and down with glee, he exclaimed, “Alright, from now on, I shall be the Clever Kurōbā as well! This title suits someone as clever as me, and I believe that’s the most splendid team name ever! How did you think of it, Sans?!”
“The inspiration came from mincho callin’ ya a clever fox earlier. We’ve had ta outsmart humans and monsters alike countless times on the battlefield, so i thought that perfectly captures our essence as a team, little bro.” If Papyrus weren’t wrapped in bandages, I was certain he would have sported an unimpressed expression. He sighed before responding.
“I must say, brother, I’m astonished; this is a whole new level of laziness from you. As the Clever Kurōbā, I’ll overlook this lapse just this once, got it?”
“Absolutely, bro. How bout we drift off ta dreamland now? A refreshin’ nap could really do wonders fer us, don’t ya think, my clever little Kurōbā?” I asked Papyrus, feeling a touch drowsy.
“Very well, I shall indulge in a brief slumber. But don’t mistake this for laziness, like the two of you,” Papyrus replied, snuggling up on my lap beside Mincho, who was already lost in peaceful dreams.
“Sweet dreams, my little brothers. May yer slumber be restful.”
