Distance was all that mattered. I wasn't stopping for anything, none of us were. The screams had all but became silent. I don't know if that's because everyone's dead or have turned into one of those things but I'm hoping they got out somehow.
We had reached the top of the stairs and it was only a mere second before Miles chose to take a left once the stairs had stopped. All three of us didn't seem to know what to do. If we stop we die but we won't have much corridor left to run down at this rate.
My eyes stayed glued to the door at the end. It was only that door nothing else. The other classrooms we had ran past were nothing but a blur now.
I hear that horrid screeching causing a squeak of fear to leave Evelyn's mouth. They're so close behind us that if this door doesn't open it was a mistake that cost us everything.
The pounding of our footsteps and harsh breathing compared to the silence of the school only amplified the importance that this door opened as we came closer to our fate.
Miles was the first to reach it and by the force of his shoulder hitting it and it not opening made an overwhelming sense of horror come over me that I almost threw up.
His rushed and panicked hitting against the door had me looking behind me to see how critical our situation was. "Miles open the door now!" I scream as I see those disfigured people race faster towards us.
Every second they grew closer. Evelyn's body is trembling with fear as tears of stress drip down her face. "It won't budge somethings blocking it!" He replies with desperation laced in his voice.
I move him out the way and banged my knuckles against the door rapidly. It's an emergency exit it should open. "Let us in! Please!" Evelyn calls out.
I frown in confusion. She bring her hand and taps on it repeatedly. "We're safe but They're gonna kill us!" She cries out and shortly after I hear hushed voices.
I back away from the door just as that man from earlier howls out in starvation. My heart is beating uncontrollably.
I look around for another way out but there isn't one it's just windows and with the drop to the bottom we wouldn't be able to make a run for it if those things came chasing.
I hear a scraping noise before the door rips open. I don't even blink before I'm pushing Eve and myself through the door. Miles rushes in as he closes the door behind him.
A loud bang erupts and Miles face scrunches in pain as he holds himself against the door struggling to keep us separate from the deceased."Cristina get them up to the roof now! Daniel help me push this back we can't let them in!" My coach shouts and I feel a pair of hands pull on me as I'm directed up the stairs.
I hear grunting as I watch coach and the boy named Daniel push a generator in front of the door. The banging continues but the door doesn't budge.
I snap out of my thoughts as we step out into fresh air. Evelyn collapses to the floor in exhaustion and relief. I hear Miles thanking coach and the other two kids as I wonder over to the edge of the schools roof.
My minds buzzing with millions of useless questions. I look out to see smoke filling the air. Crashed cars are all jammed up. People were trying to all do the same. Trying to save themselves but where are they now.
I cringe as I see puddles of blood surround one of my teachers but she's not moving. Her body lays their motionless. A lot of her was missing but I turned my head to the side not being able to look.
Anxiety thoughts fill my head and I know they're wired to go round and round as each one amplifies another. I'm no use to anyone standing here shaking with fear.
