I was lost in thought again. It was always like this. Whenever I had a class with her, everywhere I went afterward, I kept thinking about her. The soccer practice was a disaster because of that. I barely noticed the ball crossing the line between the posts under the crossbar, when I should have been defending it.
And now I was here, heading back to the classroom tower and once again thinking about the damn Kim.
Today she was different. Not that anyone noticed, but I did. I always noticed her. She was paler than usual, quieter. Well, usually, she's always quiet, but now it seemed different, as if memories were disturbing her. I wanted to find out which ones.
"You know, if you don't stop thinking about her, you'll ruin the team!" Bambam started walking beside me. He was my best friend; I didn't need to say what was going on, after all, he always figured it out on his own. He caught me several times staring at the brunette during classes, and he knew I was really interested because I didn't usually do that with anyone.
"She seemed sad today..." I sighed.
"How do you know?" he raised an eyebrow, "In seven years, I haven't even seen her smile! Let alone cry!" he sighed heavily, "I think you should ask her out."
"She doesn't talk to anyone!" I exclaimed, "Why would she agree to go out with me?"
"Do you ever thought she might not be able to speak? Like, be..."
"Mute?" I asked, sighing, "Yes, I've thought about it, but I remember her when we were still kids! Her father used to take her to the Court, and she always ran around there, chatting non-stop. She was very different..."
"She was normal." he grimaced, "Now she's going through a rebellious phase."
"No. I'm sure something happened to her, but no one wants to talk about it..." I shrugged.
"And why are you so interested?" Mingyu appeared from the other side, showing that he was following the conversation and joined us.
"I don't know. I just know that I care about her more than I should." I smiled, Mingyu wouldn't reproach me for that. That was friendship.
"Well, well! Look who it is, Kim!" Sorn, captain of our soccer team, passed by us and approached the brunette who was walking hurriedly and full of books. "Where are you going?"
She didn't answer as always, just tried to avoid, but Sorn blocked her way back. She sighed and stayed put.
"Can I carry these books for you?" she offered.
Deep down, Jennie Kim intrigued anyone.
She was beautiful, quiet, and distant from everyone. From the popular kids like Sorn, to the geeks of the school, she could fit into both but chose neither clique. She liked better to be alone and not be bothered. Never. Maybe that's why everyone's interest in her grew even more.
I sighed and bit my lip. I wanted to hear her speak, to tell Sorn to go screw herself. That's why I let her continue. But she remained quiet.
"What's wrong with you?" Sorn became exasperated. "I'm trying to be nice to you, and I'm not nice. Why don't you even respond to me?"
"Leave her alone!" I finally intervened.
Her black, feline eyes turned to me. She had no emotion, just a dark, deep void. And as incredible as it may seem, I wanted to dive in there and forget who I was.
"I just want a chance." Sorn was expecting too much, soon she would become violent.
She approached Jennie and she backed up against the wall. When Sorn touched her arms, she dropped the books.
But she didn't scream. Or move.
She closed her eyes and tears ran down her face. Sorn was taken aback. I kept looking at her expression. She felt pain. When Sorn touched her, she felt pain. How was that possible?
"Is she too cold?" Sorn shouted, and immediately let her go, but the smaller one didn't open her eyes again, she just stayed exactly where she was. "What's wrong with her?"
"Damn!" I pushed past her and went to Jennie.
My hands went straight to her neck and face. She was extremely cold, her breathing was barely felt. Sorn left in despair through the halls. Mingyu came nearer slowly.
"Get someone! Now!" I didn't even dare to look at him, but I heard his hurried footsteps move away quickly. I looked back at her face. "Come on, Jennie, look at me!"
Nothing. No movement. She was getting weaker and weaker. What was happening?
"It's alright, you know I won't hurt you." I whispered and started stroking her face. "I don't know what's happening to you, I don't know how to help you! Please, tell me what to do! I don't want to hurt you!" I begged.
Her eyes slowly opened, and I got lost in the dark night they were.
They seemed to stare into my soul.
"It's okay. You're gonna be okay, you just need to calm down," I whispered.
Everything happened very quickly. I never imagined she would do that, but she did.
She grabbed my shirt and nestled into my chest, her body very close to mine, her breath on my neck. I hesitated for a few seconds, in shock, but I hugged her back, stroking her hair.
For some reason, she felt safe with me.
"This is a miracle!"
I looked back and saw Somi with her hand on her mouth, she was amazed. Kim Jisoo next to her wasn't much different. Even the director was stunned by the scene.
I have no idea what happened there, but none of them dared to interrupt us.
