❀ Lisa ❀

Sunday morning dragged on with every endless second for me. Ever since the end of the outing that culminated in a kiss between Jennie and me, I confess I hadn't seen her. At first, I thought she might be tired and figuring out how to send all the gifts to her family. But when Sunday dawned, I rushed to the Main Hall looking for her, but Jennie didn't show up for breakfast, nor in the gardens. And now, nearing noon, I was starting to get worried.

I sat on the steps leading to the building's entrance, staring at the garden, unsure where to look or what to think.

"Hi." Mingyu sat next to me, and despite the greeting, he was too quiet.

"What's wrong?" I frowned at him, as we hadn't spoken since the day before.

Mingyu had arrived late to the dorm, lay down completely silent, and when I woke up this morning, he was already gone. Boys and girls can share dorms if there's parental consent. Since Mingyu and I have been close since childhood, no one ever interfered when he asked to room with me, especially when all the freshmen were excluding him in the first year.

"I have to tell you something, and I think you'll never forgive me for keeping it from you for so long." He looked ahead, but it seemed like he wasn't seeing anything.

"You're making me worried, Mingyu! What did you do?" I turned fully toward him. He sighed and lowered his head.

He looked exhausted, as if he hadn't slept all night. Like a huge weight was on him at that moment. He was my best friend. I wanted to help him, but I didn't know how. I'd never seen him like this.

"I don't know if I should just drop the bomb on you or tell you how it all started." He swallowed hard, still not meeting my gaze.

"Did you do something against me?" I was already worried. I didn't think he had hurt me, but I wanted to show he could trust me.

"No." He shook his head.

"Then you don't have to be afraid of my reaction." I sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder.

Then he looked at me, his eyes were dark, almost no longer showing the brown in them. He was distressed, worried, and scared. My best friend, the one who always protected me from everything and everyone, was afraid. I couldn't believe it.

"What would you say if I told you I'm going to be a dad?"

He dropped the bomb just like that. Without any prologue or introduction. And I ended up reacting the way I knew I would, but it seemed like he expected something else. The silence that followed between us was long. He took a deep breath and looked back at the horizon, not expecting anything more. I stared at the ground, unsure of what to say to him, but Mingyu always knew I would be by his side no matter what.

"How did this happen?" I finally asked.

"Well, unprotected sex, I guess!" He was sarcastic, not wanting to act that way with me, and I could see that in his eyes.

The Mingyu who made me laugh and was always ready to mess around with me or help me out wasn't there. Now, only my best friend, the adult, was.

"You never slipped up like this before!" I let out the breath I had practically been holding since he told me. "You always took care!"

"Of course! Until I let my feelings override reason!" He exhaled too, seeming calmer. "You're going to kill me when I tell you everything!"

"Maybe you don't need to tell me everything!" I said patiently. He looked at me, confused. "I'll always be here, won't I?" I shrugged.
