❀ Lisa ❀
When we reached the principal door, I turned back to Mingyu. He looked at me determinedly, and I knew that no matter what I said there, he wouldn't change his mind.
"You know, only me was called here." I shrugged and knocked on the door.
"Whenever you've been in this room, so have I! And probably, if you did something to be called here, I must be involved too." He smiled and climbed the stairs with me when we heard a voice allowing our entry.
I chuckled softly. Mingyu was like that. He would always be my best friend wherever I went. But deep down, it was just to not feel alone, after all, no one was his friend or mine.
I took a deep breath and climbed the last steps.
But nothing was going to prepare me for that. My parents were there. And Jennie's parents.
"Mr. Kim, we didn't call you here." The princiapal looked at him sternly.
"Honestly, ma'am. It's hard to separate these two in the summer holidays, let alone here!" My father grinned and greeted Mingyu with a nod.
Mingyu's father had been my father's best friend forever, so Mingyu and I were raised together. Our grandparents always said that he and I would end up getting married. That is, until they found out that I liked girls. After that, they stopped bothering me about it.
"Did I do something wrong?" I asked because it wasn't possible that only me was thinking that this situation is weird.
"We want you to tell us what happened to Miss Kim yesterday. Mr. Kim called me saying she wasn't feeling well!" The principal smiled kindly.
I stared at my friend and furrowed my brow. What did they want? The girl was fine, wasn't she?
I took a deep breath and faced the principal as I spoke.
"Sorn bothered her, but she wasn't rude or anything like that, she just wanted her attention, but when she touched her, she got weird. She started crying. Then Sorn said she was too cold, seemed weak, almost breathless." I sighed, "Sorn got scared and ran away, but I couldn't leave her there and tried to help."
"I want you to tell us exactly what Miss Kim did to you." The principal requested, with an almost hopeful look at Jennie's parents, before turning back to me, waiting for the answer.
"She hugged me. I think she was scared, I don't know... she just hugged me." I shrugged, feeling a bit awkward, not knowing where they were going with this conversation.
I glanced at my parents; they looked at me as if evaluating me. Jennie's mother was crying but smiling, and her husband stared at the ground very thoughtfully.
Mingyu shifted his weight from one leg to the other, starting to get bored and as confused as I was.
The silence lasted for a few seconds, until Jennie's father began to speak.
"Nine years ago, an... accident happened to Jennie." He looked at me, seemed to be happy despite everything. "Since that day, my daughter has never touched anyone. She has seizures when that happens, it's like fainting, but it takes her a long time to come back, and that worries us. She stopped talking, touching people, and withdrew from the world. You're the first person she's hugged in nine years and she didn't have any seizure! For some reason, she trusted you, do you know why?"
I shook my head denying. I knew something had happened to her! But I didn't imagine it was something serious enough to leave her like this.
"Were you two close?" My father asked, still with an evaluative look.
"No!" I said, too quickly. Mingyu grinned beside me. "She doesn't even know I exist!"
"But do you know she exists?" My father smirked, embarrassing me.
"Actually..." I bit my lip, "I find her intriguing, I can tell when she's sad or happy, and I know what she means with just a look..."
"In other words, you watch her all day. After all, I've been here as long as you two and I can't even know what I want to say looking at myself in the mirror!" Mingyu laughed, and I frowned at him.
"Do you like my daughter?" Jennie's mother spoke up but smiled. Some tears still streaming down her face.
"I don't know..." her look was so troubled that I felt sorry for her.
"My daughter was perfect, but when everything happened... You would fall in love with her if you met her before."
I knew she was telling the truth. For some reason, I knew it would be very easy for me to fall in love with Jennie Kim.
"We want a favor!" Jennie's father exclaimed right when I made a motion to leave. "If your parents agree, we would like you to get closer to Jennie."
"Why?" I asked, not understanding.
"We think she trusts you... And we think maybe you can bring her back to... you know..."
"Being a normal girl," I agreed, waiting for a response from my parents, but my father was staring at Mr. Kim.
"I taught my daughter to expect from others the same treatment he offers to people. If she's a bitch, she'll get rudeness in return. If she's kind, she'll get kindness in return." My father stood up, facing the judge; Jennie's father.
"If my daughter wants to marry yours, I wouldn't object! After all, her kindness stirred something in Jennie's heart." He smiled and shook my father's hand.
"Hey, wait a minute, what about what I want?" I separated them, "Are you considering that?"
"All you want is to get close to that girl, Lisa!" Mingyu and his big mouth held me by the arm. "Stop making drama!"
"Thanks, buddy!" I exclaimed, shaking my head, disbelievingly.
"So it's settled! Thank you, Lisa, I hope you know that we are very grateful to you." Jennie's father patted my shoulder and waved to my parents and the principal before leaving the room and all of us being dismissed. "We are counting on you to bring us our daughter back."
