Hireath Davenport

I opened the pretty pink car door and slid into the passenger's seat. My overly excited best friend sat in the driver's seat, dramatically squealing. I rolled my eyes at her dramatic antics. I looked down at my watch and frowned. "I've only been in town for a total of three hours, and you're already making me do something that I don't want to."

"It's called being a good sister. Your new step-sis wants to meet new people, and we are going to support her in every way that we can. If this means attending an awesome high school party, then so be it." Wynn shrugged. As if on cue, Jamie slid into the backseat. She looked a bit awkward and uncomfortable.

"Jamie, this is Wynn," I said.

"Hiraeth's bestest friend in the whole wide world." Wynn beamed. "I've heard a lot about you, Jamie."

"Ditto." Jamie tightly nodded. I shook my head at the fact that both of those idiots were lying. But the last thing I wanted to do was call them out and make this interaction even more awkward.

"Did Rye tell you where we're headed?" Wynn turned to the front of the car, getting ready to drive.

"She briefly mentioned something about you dragging us to a party." Jamie shrugged. She neglected to mention the fact that I spent ten minutes begging her to say no so that we wouldn't have to go.

"Dragging? Really?" Wynn turned to me with a scowl.

"I call it, how I see it," I said. "You should start driving before I decide to get out of the car."

Wynn huffed and started the car. "We are going to the first party of the school year. It's thrown by Jason Lakehurst, as always." She informed Jamie.

"Lakehurst? Isn't that the name of our school?" Jamie asked.

"Jason's great-grandfather spent a whole bunch of money to start the school or something. Jason's family pretty much put money into everything in this town." I explained.

"So don't piss him off? Noted." Jamie said.

"Hiraeth has a crush on him." Wynn flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder.

"Shut the fuck up, you know that isn't true," I grumbled.

"No need to get all defensive. It's not abnormal to have a crush on a boy, Hiraeth." Wynn teased.

I turned to Jamie, trying to push down the weird anger I received from the accusation. I forced my lips into a playful smile. "Don't believe a word she says. She wants everyone to be as boy-crazy as she is. It makes her feel less like a slut."

"You shouldn't call the driver names, she might drive us off of a cliff." Jamie scratched her auburn-colored afro.

"At least someone in this car is smart." Wynn stuck her tongue out at me. "Your precious lives are in my hands. You'll have no chance with Jason if you're dead."

"Good, he's obnoxious anyways," I muttered. I turned back to Jamie, who seemed a little more relaxed but still nervous. "Our town is small, so everyone will love you. You have nothing to worry about."

"Nothing?" Jamie scoffed. "So you're telling me that there are no mean girls? No one I should be weary of?"

"Every high school has mean girls," Wynn said. "However, ours are weak and dumb. No one will trip you in the hallways or spill coffee on you. The most you'll get is a side eye."

"Do you guys have any other friends?" Jamie asked.

Wynn and I glanced at each other in disgust. Wynn waved off the idea with a flick of the wrist. "As if. Who would want to hang around this weirdo?"

I side-eyed her. "I'm the weirdo? You drink strawberry milk religiously."

"It's the perfect blend of sweet and healthy," Wynn said.

"Bitch, nothing about strawberry milk is healthy. Tell her Jamie." I turned to Jamie who had her face crunched up in disgust.

"Strawberry milk is absolutely revolting," Jamie said.

"Oh my God, thank you!" I said. For the rest of the car ride, Wynn argued with Jamie and I. She promised us that we just hadn't tried the correct brand. Yet neither Jamie nor I wanted to try the "correct brand". After ten minutes of useless arguing Wynn forced us inside of the mansion where the party took place in.

Wynn immediately took us to the kitchen where an array of different drinks and snacks were offered. Surprisingly there were only a few people lounging around in the kitchen. Everyone else gathered around the pool.

"So ladies, I'm your bartender for the night. What would you like?" Wynn grabbed a solo cup.

"Nothing, I'm sure that you're going to end up drunk somehow. And we need a sober ride home." I leaned against the light blue marble counter.

Wynn frowned but she didn't deny my accusations. She turned to Jamie who was looking around in awe. "It's a nice kitchen isn't it?" A voice spoke from behind us. I looked back to find Jason and his ex standing behind us. "My grandfather built this place brick by brick. He was an utter genius."

"I'm Jamie, I'm new here." Jamie held out her hand which was quickly grabbed by Jason.

Jason flashed her a very dazzling smirk. "I'm Jason but I'm sure you already knew that. It would've been rude of your friends to take you to a party without telling you about the luxurious host."

"Hey, Jason," Wynn said from behind me.

Jason didn't hear her, instead, his attention was drawn to the girl standing beside him. She rolled her eyes and pushed him slightly. "Wow, Jason, you're so humble."

Jason laughed. "Jamie, this is Kai, my beloved girlfriend." I frowned upon hearing the news. The last time I checked, Malakai had dumped Jason.

"I'm afraid times have changed," Malakai said. I bit my lip to avoid smiling.

"Hey, Jason," Wynn said again, this time a little louder to catch Jason's attention.

Jason looked past me and gave Wynn a little wave. "Hey, Wynter." I raised my eyebrow and looked back at Wynn. She was smiling and blushing instead of correcting him about her name.

"This party is amazing," Wynn said.

"Thank you," Jason responded dryly.

"Don't inflate his ego even more. It's on the verge of bursting." Malakai pushed past Jason and the rest of us and headed towards the table of drinks.

"You love it," Jason said.

Malakai snorted. "Yeah okay. Do you want a drink or something?"

"A drink would be fine." Jason shrugged.

"What kind, Dummy?" Malakai asked.

"Surprise me."

"So are you two broken up?" Jamie asked bluntly. Wynn gasped and my jaw dropped.

Jason laughed and nodded. "Have been for a good while. Why? Do you see something you like?"

Jamie looked back at Malakai. "Yeah, something like that."

Jason looked over our group, briefly looking at me before speaking. "I just had a great idea. Me and Malakai were going to start a game of Spin the Bottle. But it's pretty lame with the two of us. How would you like to play with us?"

"Sounds like fun," Wynn spoke before I could decline.
