Hiraeth Davenport
"Why are you hanging out with Malakai?" Wynn's voice loudly boomed through my car speaker. I grimaced and turned down the volume a few notches.
I hadn't even sent a text to Wynn a minute before she called me to question me as to why I was going over to Malakai's house. "Because she's helping me score a date with Jason."
I was sure that Malakai wouldn't want me telling anyone about our tutoring sessions so I would have to be selective with what I told Wynn. Sure I trusted Wynn with my business. But if Malakai found out that I told Wynn anything sliver of friendship that we had would immediately be ruined.
"So she's pimping out her ex... for what?" Wynn asked.
"It doesn't matter," I answered. I hoped that she would take that for an answer, but I knew that it was unlikely. Even if she stopped asking, she would try to weasel the truth out of me some other way.
I would have lied, but I had an inability to keep up with my lies and it always bit me in the ass.
"Does she get something in return?" Wynn questioned.
I tried to find a way to deflect her question. "So... why are you calling me?"
Wynn sighed dramatically. "Well, I was going to invite you to hang out with me at the coffee shop. However, it seems that you're busy."
"I'll hang out with you tomorrow," I promised. Malakai had planned another "tutoring" session with me, but I had no interest in learning about Jason. I'd have to find a way to weasel my way out of it anyway.
"You suck," Wynn complained.
"You should be proud of me," I said. Ever since Malakai and Jason started dating Wynn insisted that I had a crush on Jason. She claimed that I was always staring at them 'longingly'. She quickly dismissed the fact that it had nothing to do with Jason. I was always staring at Malakai. If anything I was jealous of Jason.
"I have to admit, you are a complete genius. Getting your boyfriend's ex to help you out." Wynn praised.
I rolled my eyes at the term 'boyfriend'. It sounded icky. "Jason isn't my boyfriend-"
"Yet," Wynn interjected.
"Honestly, I just want to hang out with Malakai. That's the only reason why I'm doing this." I answered truthfully.
"Right." Wynn snorted.
I groaned. It was annoying that she wouldn't believe me. "I'm serious."
"I'm not dumb Hiraeth, you just want to date Jason." She accused.
"Not everything is about a boy, Wynn. I don't even want to date him but Malakai thinks I do." I would have cleared up the situation a long time ago but I figured that if I did, Malakai would probably stop hanging out with me.
"And again... what does she gain from this?" Wynn asked.
I breathed a breath of relief as I pulled up to Malakai's home. "I've arrived. I'll talk to you later." I quickly hung up on Wynn and got out of the car.
Before I could even make it up to the front door, Malakai's mother opened it and greeted me. "Hiraeth? How are you, Baby?"
I couldn't help but smile out of nervousness. Malakai's mother was always so sweet to me but I found her to be terrifying. "I'm doing good, ma'am."
"Who's this?" A man appeared behind Ms. Davis. He was quite skinny and funny-looking.
"This is Kai's best friend Hiraeth." Ms. Davis told him.
