Malakai Davis

I pushed away Hiraeth's hand in annoyance as she reached for her math textbook. "I've already finished my math homework. Can you get on task?" I grabbed the textbook and hopped off my bed so that I could place it on my desk.

"It's hard to focus." Hiraeth spread out her legs, damn there taking up all the space on my bed. She noticed and scooted herself over to the wall just a bit so I could climb back into bed. "Why do I need to know his favorite food anyway?"

I deadpanned, confused as to why she would even ask that stupid ass question in the first place. "Because it's nice to know things about the people that you're interested in."

"So what do I need to know?" Hiraeth asked monotonously.

I chose to ignore her tone of voice and apparent disinterest in the conversation. "He loves olives on just about anything, but mainly pizza and sardines."

"Sardines?" Hiraeth scrunched up her face in disapproval.

"He has his quirks." I shrugged. "Also he loves to watch cartoons, sports, and Criminal Minds. Which is perfect because you love Criminal Minds as well."

Hiraeth smiled. "You remembered?"

"After all those times you made me watch it at our sleepovers?" I rolled my eyes in remembrance. I was never a fan of Criminal Minds and frankly found it boring. "Speaking of, Jason will love watching it with you. Whenever you get scared, just snuggle up with him. It'll make him feel manly."

"Did you like it when I cuddled with you?" Hiraeth asked cautiously.

"Cuddle? You used me to shield you from any potential serial killers." I laughed.

"I was young and afraid." She pouted.

I thought back on whether I liked being used as a shield. I didn't have to think for long, of course, I loved it. "I guess I enjoyed it, you made me feel strong." She bit back a smile. I decided to change the subject to Jason. "Jason also loves Law and Order. He never reads, so don't mention any books because he will immediately clam up. He starts feeling stupid and..."

"He doesn't read?" Hiraeth raised an eyebrow in disbelief.

I kissed my teeth. "See, that's the kind of reaction that makes him feel dumb."

"Then what can we talk about?" She asked.

"Cars and sports," I told her. Those were Jason's favorite topics to talk about. However, he wasn't exactly keen on having to explain anything about them.

"I don't know anything about either of those," Hiraeth whined. I figured she didn't, from what I remembered she was only interested in track and didn't care for cars.

I patted her leg and feigned sympathy. "Then I guess you have some studying to do."

Hiraeth rolled her eyes and grabbed my hand to stop me from touching her. She looked at our hands for two seconds before I pulled away from her and laughed.

Hiraeth cleared her throat. "You and Jason broke up a few months ago right?"

"Three." I nodded. It honestly felt like forever ago, since the relationship was damn there over way before we called it quits.

"Do you still hang out with him?" She stopped looking at me and stared up at the ceiling.

"Yes, but it's nothing like that. We're just friends..." I started to fiddle with my fingers. "He's my only friend to a certain extent."

"Rude. I'm right here." Hiraeth grabbed my hand so I could stop playing with them. Her tone was laced with sarcasm but I could tell that she meant it.

I smiled softly. "You have nothing to worry about with me and Jason. We're only friends."
