Malakai Davis
"Mal, what are you doing here on a Saturday?" Laura screamed and hugged me. She was crushing the gift I had for her in my hand. I didn't buy it, my mother did because she was friends with Laura's father.
However, I forgot to get her a gift, so I was passing it off as mine. I just hoped it wasn't anything like socks, I didn't even bother to look at what was inside.
"I left work early, I'll just make up the hours on Monday." I shrugged. I knew it meant being extra drained the following Tuesday but I was pretty sure that I could handle it.
"I love you so much." Laura pulled apart from me and snatched the gift out of my hands. She looked at it once and then looked at me, a look of disbelief on her face. "Is this from your mom?"
"No." I lied.
"Lying bitch, you never buy anyone a birthday gift. You always forget." Laura pulled me inside her home.
Laura's house was huge, and there were a shit ton of people everywhere. There were kids swaying to the music with cups in their hands, clearly drunk already.
"We have to make a quick stop at my bedroom so I can set down my gift." Laura led me to the stairs. I didn't bother following her up the stairs, I wasn't going. If I followed her we would end up kissing and then talking about us potentially "being together" and that wasn't a conversation I wanted to have.
"I'll just stay down here," I said. Laura looked a little upset but didn't say anything, she just went upstairs alone.
"Malakai Davis, I didn't expect to see you here," I heard a voice beside me. "I thought you worked or something."
"Why are you still checking up on me?" I rolled my eyes and turned to look at Nate, my ex-boyfriend.
He shrugged. "Laura won't stop complaining about the fact that you don't hang out with her anymore."
"You two hang out now?" I had no idea that Laura and Nate even spoke outside of school.
"All the time." He grinned.
"You still have time for that? Don't you have a baby on the way?" I teased.
Nate's grin was immediately replaced with a scowl. "Still as bitter as ever."
I gasped. "Bitter? Me? Why would you think that?" Sarcasm dripped from my voice. He laughed and leaned against the staircase.
"I've missed you." He placed his hand on my shoulder.
"You miss anyone that isn't your pregnant girlfriend." Laura pushed Nate's arm off of me. "Leave my special guest alone, Nate."
"Special guest?" Nate rolled his eyes. "Now you're too good to hang out with me because your girlfriend is here?"
"Precisely." Laura wrapped her arms around me. I rolled my eyes and laughed.
"Laura, let go of me..." I tried to pull away from Laura, and accidentally bumped into someone else. I felt something cold splash onto my back.
"Oh shit, I'm so sorry." Jamie was behind me with a drink in her hand. I could immediately tell that her eyes were red but she didn't look high in the slightest, which meant that she was upset about something. She didn't even give me a chance to say anything before she ran upstairs.
"I'll be right back." I rushed upstairs before Laura or Nate could stop me. I didn't see which room Jamie ran into, so I took a wild guess and knocked on the bathroom door. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine Malakai, go back to Laura's party!" Jamie yelled.
"Jamie, open the damn door," I said stubbornly. She opened the door and pulled me in. She slammed the door shut and locked it behind her. "Are you okay?"
