Everyone stared at them with confusion and anger filling their facial expressions.
And their mother wasn't going to let anything slide.
"Start talking!" She yells at them and Max and the police are all frozen on the porch.
"It was just supposed to be a joke, Mum." Lukas begins.
"We overheard Luna talking to herself the one day and we asked her about her imaginary friend." Logan chimes in.
"So when we saw you went up there and heard you talking about it..." Lukas cuts in.
"I grabbed some of Luna's crayons from her backpack in the hall and drew the picture to scare you once I heard you were going to the bathroom." Logan recants and Helen is fuming as she looks at her boys.
"We didn't think about what could happen. Wanted to make you scared enough to want to move out so we didn't have to live here." Lukas quickly interjects, but this makes everything worse.
"And we didn't think Aunt Lauren would get upset with Luna like she had."
"We really didn't think she'd run away!" Lukas says as guilt pools over him and his brother- they begin crying and Helen has it in her to slap both of them silly- but she refrains from doing so. Everyone can see how angry and pissed off she is as they hear her monitor beeping like wild. Getting even more angry and upset with the constant blaring sound, she reaches under her shirt, unclips it and whips it at her boys- hitting them both with the rubber and censored band in their chests. The police take a step down towards them- thinking they will need to intervene.
"Lauren- take the boys for me? I really can't look at them right now." Helen commands and Lauren doesn't even try to argue, she and Casey pull at the boys and goad them into moving away from their Mum.
Helen digs in her purse, finds her keys and unlocks her car. Going around to the drivers seat, she slides in and Max rushes over- the best he can rush- and opens her drivers door.
"Helen—you shouldn't be driving." He says and she turns and looks at him with the most painful apologetic face he has ever seen. A face that tells him no matter what he says or wishes, she is doing this because it's her fault and she will never be able to convince him it isn't. Sighing, he shuts the door for her and she backs out of the drive.
She passes Lauren and them heading to the bus stop to head to Lauren's and Helen feels her whole body is on fire.
How could her boys let something so innocent get out of hand?
And why wouldn't they have mentioned this earlier?
More over, they're still that pissed about living with Max that they would do such a cruel trick that they knew very well could end up a disaster.
"Bloody idiots. What the Hell were they thinking?!" She growls to herself as she drives, her chest rising heavily as she scans the streets and her fears bubbling to the surface. "I need to find her. I can't go back and face Max if I don't find her. It's all my bloody fault. If I wouldn't have gotten so upset over a bloody drawing and those stupid tricks of theirs- this never would have happened."
She continues to drive and she tries so hard to think of where Luna might've gotten too.
"She could be anywhere. She's been gone for seven hours now. She could have hopped on a subway or been taken by some...someone. Lord...I just... I love her and I need her to be okay...I need...I need to find her- please...please let me...I'll do anything. Please just let me....find her safe and okay...." She blubbers as she drives and as she turns at a light and heads towards the river, she hears something. Her eyes scan everything: no matter where she looks, it does her no good, because she knows Luna is very smart and if she wanted to be found she would have been. "God...I know I haven't been the best Mum...best wife...daughter...friend—I have fucked up so much in my life and I have tried so hard to make things better and perfect..."
