˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ The second Dustin got home that day, Kat knew something was wrong. She could read her little brother like a book.

He slammed the door shut, which to be fair, he always did; but the way his footsteps were heavier and faster, it was like he was in a hurry.

Kat poked her head out of her room and tried to look inside of Dustin's. She could faintly hear angry muttering and some sniffing, so she decided it was best to check up on him.

"Dustin?" Kat slid the door open, keeping her face stoic. "Are you okay?"

The boy tried to wipe the fresh tears at the corners of his eyes, even though he knew Kat didn't mind. It took him a moment before he finally said, "Will is missing."

"Missing?" Kat echoed. She started to think this was a whole elaborate Dungeons and Dragons game, she didn't know anyone else more obsessed with the game than Dustin. Still, she went with it, walking farther into his room. "What do you mean?"

"The Chief came down to talk to us today"—Us, meaning: Lucas Sinclair, Mike Wheeler, (Nancy's brother) and himself; they've been friends forever—"said Will didn't come home last night. He asked what road he takes."

Kat tried to hide the pity in her eyes, she knew Dustin hated that. Instead, she offered him a hug, holding her arms out. Obviously, he accepted the offer, locking his arms around Kat's waist. "It'll be okay, kid," she muttered to him, but something in her mind kept telling her that wasn't right.

˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ Dinner at the Henderson house was different from usual houses.

At usual homes, everyone eats a homemade meal together and they sit and talk about their day. Kat's home is not usual homes.

Instead, the kids ate alone, often times making their own meals while their mother gave all the attention to the cat, Mews, who never left her arms.

But that night, Kat couldn't help but wonder why her mom decided to start eating together.

"We haven't eaten together in years," Kat remarked. A little passive-aggressively, to add.

Her mom smiled, either completely unfazed or completely bothered by what Kat said. "I thought it would be nice to support your brother, don't you agree, Kat?"

Kat bit the inside of her lip. Mom couldn't help but make snide remarks to Kat, or just completely ignore her at times. It's obvious that she had a favorite, and that favorite was not Kat.

To Kat, she felt like she had raised herself, but to Mom, she made Kat who she was. Obviously, they just aren't on the same page. It was always, 'Dusty!' and 'love you, Dusty!' and 'have a good day, Dusty!' Dusty, Dusty, Dusty. She couldn't escape it.

So, Kat had decided that maybe if she got close to perfect grades, joined clubs, played on Varsity Volleyball, ran track, and learned French, then it would be enough for Mom; that maybe she would finally notice her. But, no. It never was enough.

˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗  Dinner was full of passive aggressive comments and penetrating stares, but finally, Kat got the chance to leave the table.

She went into her bedroom and called Nancy, asking if they could study together. Nancy agreed, but Kat had to go there, something about house arrest.

Okay, no problem, she could drive, she did have her license. The only issue was that she did not have a car.

Kat easily passed by Mom and went out the front door, grabbing Mom's car keys on the way out.

Okay, that was easy.

She drove to Nancy's house, a place she had been to thousands of times, but not without hitting a few curbs on the journey. Hey, nobody's perfect.

But someone got there before her. Kat parked on the side of the road behind a dark red BMW. Her suspicions rising, Kat decided against going to the front door and instead went to the side of the house, using the same tactic as usual when she snuck in.

Kat climbed up onto the roof, barely looking over the windowsill. Although she didn't need to look too long to see Steve Harrington making out with Nancy.

She wanted to bang on the window, scare him off, but that was when she saw Nancy kissing back.

Why would she do that?

Kat easily slid off of the roof and back into Mom's car, angrily biting the inside of her cheek. If she didn't, she'd probably scream.

That day made Kat hate Steve Harrington more than she ever did. How could he do that? He's going to pretend to love Nancy then completely forget about her in a month, just like every other girlfriend he's had.

Kat wanted to scream. She slammed the door shut, angrily walking to her room. She flopped down on her bed, screaming face first into her pillow.

God, why was he doing this?!
