˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ Barb never showed up to school the next day.

Kat tried to not think about it, but it was gnawing at her. Something wasn't right.

As Kat sat with Steve and TommyandCarol, the only things she wanted to do was die, or have Barb come back.

She got neither of those, because Nancy sat down next to Steve soon after.

The three idiots, as Kat referred to them as, were all arguing about science and frostbite when Nancy interrupted them. "Hey Tommy. When you left, did you see Barb?"

"What?"

"Barbara," Nancy said again with a slight eye roll. "She's not here today."

"I seriously have no idea who you're talking about."

"Don't be an ass man," Steve heroically added, Kat just then noticing how unnecessarily tall his hair was. "Did you see her leave last night or not?"

"No, she was gone when we left," he finally answered.

Kat didn't listen to anything after that. Barb never missed school. She only missed one day in fourth grade when she broke her wrist, but even then she called to let Kat know. It wasn't even a thought in Kat's head that Barb could've run away.

˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ Kat couldn't read Nancy's face as she called Mrs. Holland.

"But she did come home, right? After the vigil?" Nancy asked. Kat remembered that Barb's mom actually cared where she went. Couldn't relate.

"Right, yes. She did, sorry." Nancy shot a look to Kat, one that she could read. One with fear, but also confusion. "I meant, did she come home this morning? I think she left some textbooks and she was gonna go pick them up."

It must've been another bad answer because Nancy added, "I, uh, I just remembered that she's at the library."

Nancy hung up the phone, only giving Kat a head shake before she walked off.
